Let me start off by saying I know there are a couple other crysis threads like the "official crysis 2 thread" however as they are focused on entirely on a few issues such as lack of graphics options, lack of prone and lack of directx 11 I thought I would write up a review that actually tried to tackle all aspects of the game. Yes the game has been consoled, yes the lack of prone Dx11 and prone suck, no one denies this. Yes crytek is full of BS in claiming they are fully behind the PC industry. I would prefer if we could avoid these topics in this thread and actually try to cover how the gameplay and story were and changes unrelated to graphics, those have all been beat to death in other threads.

I wrote this after finishing the game hoping to help people who have not decided yet on whether or not to purchase it.

Important facts:
Time to complete - 12 hours to complete
System specs used: Stock AMD Phenom 2 9850 (2.5ghz quad core), 6 gigs of Ram, AMD 6870
Game settings: 2560 x 1600, Very High
Purchased through steam

Overall impressions:
I won't lie, I was pretty pissed when I booted up the game and found that there were almost no graphics settings. I was also rather annoyed at the lack of tie in to Crysis 1/ crysis warhead. Once I got past the graphics issue and started evaluating the actual game though I was rather impressed. The game looks fantastic, game play is varied and the story is actually pretty decent. This has been one of the few FPSes in a while that I was actually satisfied with my purchase on. It had solid gameplay, a decent plot, a good ending and was long enough to provide satisfaction. That being said I think multiplayer is currently very buggy (I know I am not the only one having issues) and takes a step backwards from crysis wars to a simple COD clone. I would recommend this game for the single player campaign, but not for the multiplayer.

Below I have detailed my opinions on the game more specifically. Green meens I thought it was better, Yellow means I am neutral on the issue, Red means I thought it was worse compared to previous Crytek games. Not everything is weighted equally (hence why some general categories may be green even though they have more red subcategories, some of those sub categories may just not be a big deal to me).

The Suit:

I really liked the new suit. In Crysis 1 personally I rarely ever used speed mode or power mode. In Crysis 2 they changed the powers around and now I actually use them all. All of these powers now have hot keys tied to them and are much easier to switch between (though you can still now access them through a Crysis 1 style menu if you want). Overall I really liked the new suit changes and found myself switching between all the abilities quite often The suit also has 4 modules you can upgrade with stuff you get from killing aliens.

Here is a rundown on the suit powers now

Cloak - about the same as Crysis one although the graphic looks better. Also if you have a silencer on your weapon and are at near full energy you can stay in cloak while firing (although it does drain energy really fast, esp. depending on the silenced weapon used)
Cloak Graphics: Screenshot

Armor - Armor is now an active mode that drains suit energy while on. However when it is on it provides a lot of bullet protection, you actually feel like you are in armor and can take a lot of hits. The new armor change made armor at least for me go from back up regen energy mode to a mode I actually used for assault. This mode also has a graphic now.

Armor graphics while being hit with bullets: Screenshot

Speed/Power - These have been integrated into to sprint, melee and jump functionality now. Unfortunately you can only sprint while draining energy, but for jump and melee you tap the button to do a normal no-energy jump or normal melee and hold the button to do a power jump or power melee. I found this to work much better than the system in Crysis 1, It caused me to actually use power melee quite often as it was faster to use (you can also use these abilities while in armor or cloaked mode). You can now also use strength to stabilize scoped weapons just by holding shift instead of switching modes and can do it while in other modes like armor or cloak. I thought this was a very good change.

Nanovision - New mode , basically just thermal vision, replaces night vision ,can be active at the same time as other modes. This was a good addition although I do wish they had both this and night vision.
Nano Vision: Screenshot

Visor/binocs: unfortunately now you only get 1x / 3x zoom instead of 1x/5x/10x but now on your visor will display tactical options, like sniping points, and ammo boxes. Your binocs and HUD also display your current objective and distance, I thought this was a good change from Crysis 1 except for the lack of 10x zoom. It now also looks more like something that would display on the inside of a visor.

Weapons:

Variety - There are more weapons then there are in Crysis 1 and there distribution is better. There are now 3 pistols, 2 submachine guns, 3 rifles, 2 sniper rifles, 2 shotguns, 2 machine guns, a grenade launcher and a heavy machine gun that you can rip off of tanks/emplacements and carry around (although the HMG you can't reload and has no attachments), a missile launcher, c4 and grenades. In addition most of these weapons are available throughout the game, so unlike Crysis 1 you actually have some choice rather than running around with he AK47 the entire game. There is no end game super weapon however. I thought the weapon variety was a big improvement over Crysis 1

Ammo Availability - There are boxes to refill all your ammo on all your standard guns all over the place (these boxes tend to specialty ammo such as gauss rifle ammo or grenades). I found this to be very nice as you never had to worry about running out of ammo and could you whatever your favorite gun was for the most part. I ran through a good portion of the game with the DSG-1 Sniper rifle because I like sniping and did not have to worry about running out of sniper ammo.

Attachments - Attachments are now weapon specific. You can no longer attach any attachment to any weapon. I found this to be a little lame considering guns use standardized rails. The laser sight is now considered a weapon sight as well so you can no longer use the laser in combination with the reflex/acog / sniper scope, I found this to be stupid and thought that the new laser sight sucks. The lines in the scopes are pretty thick (they did not make me thing of actual scopes at all) overall I was rather disappointed with the new weapon attachments.

Sidearms - You no longer have a separate sidearm slot. You now get 2 weapons no matter what they are, this renders pistols almost entirely useless as why would you carry a pistol instead of an assault rifle/sniper rifle/shotgun if you had the choice. Also you can no longer dual wield pistols. I found this to be rather disappointing.

Crosshairs - unlike Crysis 1 there are no crosshair options, kind of a bummer but not a huge deal as most of the time you use ADS.

Graphics
Visuals - Overall the games looks fantastic, could it have been better if it was developed soley for the PC, yeah probably but I still think this is currently one of the best if not the best looking PC game that is currently released. The faces in the game were the best people I have seen in any game to date and it was the first time since Half life 2 where I have gone "damn that person looks damn good". The suit and weapons are also incredibly detailed.

Dude in Crysis 3:Screenshot

Animations - There are a lot more animations for falling long distances, climbing up on stuff opening doors and so forth where you see your hands/feet, I thought they were all very well done and added decently to the immersion.

Graphics controls - This was a serious WTF moment for me. There is almost zero control over the graphics options. You can control the resolution, and change the game to one of 3 settings, low, medium or high (called high, very high and extreme though) and set you fOV via console. No control over motion blur, no control over bloom, no control over AA or AF, they even locked down the console so that unlike the demo you can no longer adjust these settings via console. What the hell crytek. HUGE negative for me. BTW Default FOV is 55 degrees verticaly, corresponding to 79 degrees horizontally (at 16:10)

No directx 11 or 64bit support: I know if I don't bring it up someone else will. The game is directx 9 only currently and they have claimed that they will add dx11 support eventually. Honestly this is not a huge deal for me as I still think the game looks fantastic, could it look better if it was in dx11 yes, but honestly it still looks better then pretty much anything else so it doesn't really matter that much.

Optimization - The game runs fantastic and very smooth I was actually rather impressed with how well it ran considering how good it looks. I find the game actually runs a bit smoother then original Crysis even though it looks better (in my opinion). I have heard that there are some issues with SLI/crossfire, I have not encountered these as I do not have an SLIed system.

General Gameplay

ADS/crouch toggle: I know there were a lot of complaints about this from the demo so I thought I would address it. There is now a menu option to set if crouch is toggle or hold the button and if ADS is toggled or button held.

Removal of Prone: There is no prone, yes it sucks and is probably a casualty of being ported to consoles, but in the end once you get used to not having it, it is not really a huge loss.

Tie in to Crysis 1:
I was very disappointed in the lack of tie to Crysis 1.
None of the aliens make a reappearance from the first game (I hated fighting the flying ones, but I would have thought at least the walkers would have reappeared). The aliens look different (for some reason they are all read now instead of all blue. There is absolutely no reference them sucking the energy out of stuff and making the big cold spheres (a decently large portion of Crysis 1 and Crysis Warhead) there is no mention of Psycho or Nomad (except a possible single sentence that is very indirect and may not refer to them at all) and only passing reference to prophets trip back to the island or the fact that prophet basically goes nuts at the end of the first game.
I strongly suspect this is due to the game being ported to consoles that did not have access to the first game.

Crysis 2 Aliens: Screenshot
Story: If you evaluate the story on it's actually pretty decent. There are some twists and turns and things that you would not expect. Crytek's writing has never been fantastic, but this story was actually pretty decent. I would put it the overall story arc actually as their best story so far however the characterization was lacking.

Characterization: Crytek tried to go with a silent protagonist this time and it just did not work very well. The main character just has no defining traits and until the midway through the game you are generally only on the radio with one person at a time and hence don't even feel like you are part of a team. Some of the NPCs are decent, but even then you have almost no connection to them (most of them don't even know who you are) and hence don't really care about them. While the story was good I thought the story was good, characterization was pretty crappy.

Ending: In the light of many recent games I have played I feel that it is worthwhile to note that this game has an actual ending. While the ending does leave the possibility of a sequel it is a very much a you kicked ass and beat the game ending. It was actually one of the more satisfying FPS endings I have had in a while. I thought the ending was more satisfying then the ending to crysis 1.

Saves: Crysis 2 uses a checkpoint system I have heard a lot of people call it consolized, however you have to remember Far Cry did not use quick saves either. I don't really have any feelings on this either way as while there checkpoints are a little unforgiving they to deny me the ability to quicksave spam (which is probably for the best considering I will save like 5 times a battle in a game with quicksave). If you have checkpoints you will probably find this a negative.

Game play Variety
- I found that there was a good variety in scenarios. There were some scenarios that strongly favored sneaking around and either assassinating people one at a time while remaining undetected while there were other scenarios with constant streams of guys where wading into groups of dudes with a HMG was a great option. Overall I liked the variety and thought it accommodated a good deal of play styles. I thought game play had more variety then Crysis 1.

Linearity - The game is more linear then Crysis 1. For the most part it is a rail shooter without the huge jungles of Crysis 1 to sneak through. They do try to provide multiple options for a lot of the encounters, but it is still a little bit more of a rail shooter then Crysis 1.

Multiplayer:
I was not able to play multiplayer, but not for lack of trying. Every time I start up the game and go to multiplayer it asks me for a my serial key (I have now entered my serial key a good 15 times). Pretty much every server I join claims it is full, even if immediately after the refresh it only has 12/16 people in it. After 1 attempt any server that is not full will claim that my serial code is in use. I did manage to get into a server once, but I waited 5 minutes in the lobby and the game never started. I can do some evaution based of the demo however.
This is COD with supersuits. I don't mean it has similar game mods or anything like that, I mean it is pretty much exactly COD with super suits. Most of the suit modules directly mimic COD perks and the kill streaks are very similar as well. Again I have not played the full version so I cannot comment on the balance of the guns, but overall I thought it was fun. If you like COD multiplayer you will probably like Crysis 2 multiplayer, if you don't like COD then you probably won't like Crysis 2 multiplayer it's that simple. The Suit modes (Nanovision, cloak, armor) give it a very small amount of difference from COD, but not much.

I hope this is helpful to some people

I would love to read the review, but can your images are so huge that they're stretching the form out making it hard to read. I don't think most people on this forum have monitors capable of viewing it all at full res. Can you make them thumbnails please?

Yeah sorry about that, forgot [H]Forum does not do automatic thumbnails, I changed them to links, it should be readable now.

Thanks for that.

I agree on the weapon mods. I kind of understand the idea behind picking them up as you go, but it really shouldn't be "different one for every weapon". Its annoying and frustrating.

I actually carry a pistol around in pretty much every shooter. I'm the type of person who will stand on top of a building and use the pistol as a sniper rifle, just to see how good I can aim.

Good review, very well done and professional looking.

nice review, and a fix for the broken links is to add the missing "/" at the end :D

Great review. Refreshing to see feedback about this game that doesn't contain "THIS GAME SUCKS I WILL NEVER BUY A CRYTEK GAME AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111"

In some of the flashback scenes they do show the naked, blue aliens from the original game. I think they're only red now because of the bionic suits their wearing allowing them to walk around. I assume they're wearing some kind of red "skin" over their blue bodies to protect themselves while giving them mostly free range moment. ... but that could be my imagination.

Great level-headed review. I agree with most of it except maybe that you disliked the silent hero approach for this game. I liked that Alcatraz had no lines (and no face on top of that), really made me wonder how he was feeling throughout the whole crazy adventure.

Thank you very much for going into detail and not just making blunt statements about the game one way or another - this was certainly helpful to me. I do want to get this game, but I would like for CryTek to at least sort out the multi-player issues (or even release the patch for DX11 but that is less important to me) before purchasing the game.

I'm a bit confused about the system requirements though. I know Crysis 2 is well optimized, but does anyone know if the game is heavy on the CPU? I only have an i3 540 for the moment (I am planning to upgrade to an i7 somewhere down the road) but with a GTX 570; even though I could max out the demo @ 1080p with a good frame rate, I am wondering how the final release will perform on my system.

Like Kniah and Speedy mentioned, some of your links lead to a 404.

I did not think the game was worse then crysis 1 in every single way. I thought it was more varied gameplay wise then crysis 1, I thought suit controls were better, I thought the graphics were better, and I thought the story was better (when taken on it's own). Yes it sucked that the story said almost nothing about crysis 1 and I devoted a section to that, I also thought the characters were crappier and I devoted a section to that as well. The enviroment is still destructable, I'm not sure if you noticed how much cement you could blow away on support beams and baricades, but I got killed a couple times when my baricade I was hiding behind disintegrated. I fail to see how your review is "much more accurate" a review is a personal opinion it can't be right or wrong unless someone is trolling. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. One thing I am curious about though is that you said it is a below average FPS, I am curious what you are comparing it to. I personally found it to be much more enjoyable then either of the recent CODs, Bulletstorm, Deadspace, Bioshock 2 or Farcy 2, I mean it's no half life 2, but I'm just wondering what games you are comparing it to that are so much better?

Links should be fixed now.
I found the final version to perform roughly on par with the demo so if you could run the demo you can run the game.

*Normally I am a okay with silent here, however I got kind of annoyed that the entire first portion of the game where people are trying to kill you because they think you are an infected prophet could have gone significantly differenatly if your dude could have just said "I'm not prophet and I'm not infected, now lets go kill some aliens".

This did not need its own thread. Also, you pretty much gave them a pass for making a game that is worse than Crysis 1 in just about every conceivable way other than being able to pull yourself up onto a ledge. Here is my much more accurate review:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1GKBD4NH7G7XE/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R1GKBD4NH7G7XE

Both reviews are great, but yours gets to the core of the issues of the game, less "I like" and "I feel". OP, stay away from those terms when doing a review, people tend to tune your opinion out.
I disagree with the facial animations, Warhead had better, more realistic facial animations and hair. The female solider with the botox lips looked absolutely ridiculous and Goulds was a cardboard cutout, below Crytek's standards.

I think you're not giving credit where credit is due. Yes, it sucks that Crysis 2 isn't the game we wanted it to be, but it's still really fun and I sat down for ~5 hours and had a blast yesterday, something that I haven't done for a single player game in a long time.

It's quite a nice game, just sucks they left stuff out, but thats no reason to let the game pass you by.

Good points overall. I'm personally glad to see a level-headed take on Crysis 2 here at the [H]. I'm interested in getting it now, but I'm going to wait until it lowers in price. I still don't like the movement towards $60 pc games, and would rather wait until it's at the $40-$50 range.

On a side note, I find it rather striking that console reviewers are typically giving the game fairly high scores, whereas every single PC player (including the majority of the [H]) have gotten a mass mindset that the game is the most horrible piece of shit to exist. It looks like a pretty decent game to me overall, at least better than the first. I installed the first Crysis' demo for benchmarking my pc when I built it. I was thoroughly bored by the game though, so I never bought it. This one, however, looks quite interesting.

I'm relatively sure that Crysis 2 naysayers are mostly infuriated by the shaft given to pc experience and that it's not a performance hog like the first. They're so blinded by it that they don't even give the gameplay a chance. Even if a game is half decent, you can still make it out to be the worst thing ever if you're totally focusing on the negatives. Needless to say, the Crysis 2 launch has showed me the definition of the pc elitist. Which is why I classify my self as a pc gamer instead.

Disagree. I can get a summary of the features and/or lack thereof anywhere. Sometimes it's nice to hear some opinion in a review. It can be helpful in many ways.

Thanks for the good read OP. Still plan on purchasing the game when it gets cheaper.

suit shortcuts from crysis are missing in this sequel. They rocked. I miss them :(

Q- Armor

E- Stealth

Shift- Speed

Hold jump or melee- Power

No double tapping shit. Its much easier to quickly jump between modes and speed and power are automatic.

I prefered the double tap to enable stuff. I think its a bit retarded how you can't "standard" run but HAVE to speed run and far too often I accidently power jump when I meant to regular jump.

Crysis 1/Warhead's method of double press shift to speed run, double press jump to strength jump and double tap melee to strength melee was better than the Crysis 2 method.

Ideally I'd want double tap to speed run and power jump, with Q and E single tap to armour and cloak.

Yeah I'll give you that jumping is a bit annoying. I'm the type that usually holds a button down when jumping, its a habit. Makes jumping a pain at times.

With double tapping you don't need to bind 4 new hotkeys like you do in Crysis 2. The double tap keys are optimally placed, since they go on top of existing primary keys. They should have left in all three options rather than stripping one away.

IMO 99% of the people never knew about this since it wasn't enabled by default. Both this an simple iron sights went HEAVILY unused.

Like I really care though. I'm not buying this pos anyways.

I didn't like double tapping. Also the placement of the hotkeys here work much better in my experience. It just feels easier to quickly switch between modes on the fly. Whether or not it is doesn't really matter, all that matters is how it feels. Yes it would have been nice if they had kept all three options in, but at least its not a major issue.

If you think the game is a POS without ever buying it how exactly did you come to that conclusion?

re: no endgame weapon.

might have something to do with the fact that there is no real endgame. at least not a challenging one. just 4 aliens with a useless cloak that come at you one by one like nameless bond villains. also they only took 1.5 clips each of that lightning-firing smg or whatever to kill.

spoil much? man...

While I realize reviews are personal opinions I have to disagree that this game looks fantastic. HL2 and Crysis 1 both made me go gaga, this game makes me go "Really? This is it?" It doesn't look anything like we would expect from a modern PC game. perhaps if they released it, or soon release PC graphics upgrades I'd change my mind. But as it is the textures were weak, characters were cardboard, story was perhaps the weakest element of the entire game, and overall I'd give it a 5 out of 10 in its current state on the PC.

Just bought this the other day. I was half-expecting Crysis 2 to rape my wife, light my house on fire and pour salt on my lawn the way everybody was talking about it.

Game of the year? Not even close, but a decent game. So far I'm enjoying it. Graphically, its a little better than average but its nice not having to have a $3k rig to simply play it like I did with its predecessor.

hi,

just a few questions on crysis 2 controls, tweaking and gameplay, which is more important to me than the graphics people like to rave about (or not):

- autoaiming: as i understood, in the crysis 2 demo this was a client-side option in multiplayer, which is quite ridiculous imo. is this option still there in the full version? is using it an advantage?

- controls and mouse aiming: are they crisp and accurate? console ports often have a laggy mouse input and only a slider that doesn't allow precise sensitivity tweaking. in some games the leftmost position of the slider bar is already too fast, which forces one to change the windows mouse settings. how's the mouse in crysis 2? this and autoaiming are the most important points for me.

- someone wrote that getting hit while sprinting slows you down to normal walking, which is another newbie-friendly trait.

- graphics tweaking: so far, people posted that there are only 3 or 4 available graphics modes with no separate tweaking for motion blur or bloom. can you switch off these features from the console?

- gameplay has been described as call of duty regenerating health with power suits, is this true? which isn't bad for me, aespecially the power suit part.

just asking because i don't feel like spending money on a game i just want to play 1-2 times in single player and never touch it again for online play because of a few badly implemented "features".

thanks

In order

The patch disables aim-assist.

They feel good to me, but I'm sure other people can nitpick it enough to tell how good or bad the mouse accel is.

*Shrugs.*

No you can not. There is a program released that allows you to edit a lot of options. If that rumor of the DX11 patch is true there will be advanced graphics options there. We'll find out today.

Same as the original Crysis and Warhead. Both games had regenerating health. At least having the suit makes more sense than just auto-magically healing cause the game designers say so. It does seem a little quicker here than in the previous games, but the fire fights also seem faster paced and you die a lot quicker so its balanced out.

That is all based on single player stuff though. I haven't touched the multiplayer, probably never will.

something like this tweak tool?

ok, then i might give crysis 2 a try. i'm not comfortable with graphics options being forced on me, especially blur and bloom make it hard to see anything.

i can live with mediocre graphics as long as a game is fun. unfortunately, developers tend to neglect small, but important details like controls nowadays. it's not like they couldn't do what 15 years old games already had, they just don't care.

thanks for your help.

That is exactly the tool. If nothing else, change the FOV. 55 is the default and that is insane. I think even Bioshock 2 had a higher FOV and that game drove me nuts.

I haven't played through the entire game yet, but so far I agree with the OP. Except I don't like the graphics as much, they may be better technically, I just thought the jungle setting was more fun to look at and move around in.

I'm glad to hear the game doesn't go ape-shit towards the end frame-rate wise, and that those annoyances seem to be absent this time around. In Crysis 1 that did annoy me

FOV 55 as default? i wonder what testing the game had. it's like running around looking through a scope all the time.

i found some console commands to put paste into the config and kill motion blur, those seem to be the first three. untested, as i don't have the game yet.

Good review but it's missing the key statement, "I can't wait to play this though again". To me that's the hallmark of a great game. Big thanks for giving the length of the SP campaign, most people forget to add that.

The FOV is vertical. I've seen 74 recommended for 16:10 displays. (How do you know it's like a scope if you haven't played? ;) )

FOV of 90 is too big in this game and the world warps with a fisheye effect on a 16:9 monitor with it that high. I'm running 70 or 75 (dont remember which).

hmm, last night i set FOV at 89 (equates to 120 deg horiz FOV) and i didn't notice a fisheye effect. i'll make sure to keep an eye out for it tonight and see if i need to lower the value.

I agree, but 70 is still a bit too low. 75 or 80 (I use 80) are perfect IMO.
