CRT vs LCD: power consumption

I'm about to move out and start paying for my own rent and utilities and I'm curious just how CRT's stack up against LCD's when it comes to electricity consumption.

LCDs definitely use less. Most will state they use 40% the power of a CRT, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. They definitely do use less.

In the grand scheme of things, the difference between a CRT and an LCD being on for a month is going to be very little...probably less than $5 a month....especially if you turn your monitor off overnight like most people do.

TFTs (17+") use a bit less than 50 Watt, most of it is used by the backlight. CRTs can use anywhere between 50 (old, 13" monochrome displays) and 150 - 200 Watt (usually close to 150 Watt for a 19" CRT).

CRTs are real energy suckers. The use more energy than the computer itself (From what I've heard).

like djnes said... it will probably make a $5 difference a month at the most.. so in a year you would save about $60 - $100.. most lcds cost quite a bit more than that over a similar sized crt...

therefore my suggestion...

if you already own a crt, then keep it..
if you don't own any monitor.. get an lcd.. cause it will save you money after say 3 years or so.. and it is more convenient and shit..

but if you are doing anything professional.. with colors... photoshop.. things like that.. stick with a crt...

I'll probably stick with my CRT and get another one... I cant afford a 20" LCD

If you're running an EPIA-based system, perhaps. The average P4 system with a decent videocard will easily use more than 150 Watt when mildly stressed, let alone a Prescott P4 with an nVidia 6800 (103 + 80 or so Watt for these components alone).
