CRT - use sRGB?

I am using an HP p1230 (rebranded Diamond Pro 2070SB) CRT monitor with my retro gaming XP machine. All of my previous monitors allowed me to change color temperature which I always set to 6500K since it looks best to me. However, this one does not have a preconfigured 6500K option - instead it has sRGB option which is based on 6500K.

How exactly does this differ from simply setting temperature to 6500K? It must be different because sRGB disables brightness/contrast controls and superbright modes. Visually it looks the same as if I set custom temperature of 6500K manually, but maybe there are cases where it wouldn't look the same?

Am I going to gain/lose certain color ranges by using/not using sRGB? Maybe sRGB limits the colors the monitor otherwise would be able to display if that mode was disabled?
 
First off, great monitor :)

sRGB specifies not only the white point and primaries (see introduction to the trinitron WinDAS WPB guide), but a "gamma" function.

I believe sRGB mode locks out superbright and brightness contrast controls in order that this gamma function be respected. It won't limit the saturation of the colors, but it will limit the brightness. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however, especially if you use the monitor in a light controlled environment where high luminances are not required.

If you're serious about color accuracy, I highly recommend getting a colorimeter (see the "choosing a measuring instrument" section in the above linked guide), and adjusting the display to the best of your ability using the OSD and/or service menu (I have the user manual and service manual for your monitor if you want me to upload it), and then use ArgyllCMS to do the rest (see the "Fine Tuning the LUT..." section of my guide). That way, you can use a mode other than sRGB and still adjust the gamma intelligently, rather than relying on what the monitor thinks it should be.

Ok, so let's compare the following two settings:

1. sRGB
2. 6500K manual setting with THE SAME brightness/contrast settings as used in sRGB

Will [1] limit the color output of the monitor compared to [2]? By limit I mean unable to display certain colors a human could see when using [2] (e.g., making extreme colors (R,G,B) dimmer, or whatever).

I'm asking this because as far as I understand, sRGB is a limited color space, so maybe by using sRGB I'm placing an unnecessarry limit on the output of the monitor.
 
Did you read the introduction to the WPB guide I linked to? It explains what sRGB actually is, as well as color temperature.

the answer to your question is that they'll be the same.
