Well I ordered a "recertified" Dell 19" CRT monitor from acompinc.com for a kid in my town, with a system I made him a few weeks ago. He had $200 to spend on the monitor and a set of speakers, so I found that monitor for around $140 shipped (it had to be 19", black, and flat screen), and used the rest of the money for Logitech X530 speakers.

Anyway, I tested the monitor to see if it worked, and it did. So he picked it up with his new comp. He gets home, everything is fine. Comp runs great, but he noticed two horizontal lines on the screen dividing it into thirds. I didn't notice them.

A couple days later he messages me and says the monitor displayed "no signal" or something on it. He tests with another monitor and it works. Then like a minute later he tells me the monitor works now, after he was "wiggling the wire in the back". So I'm guessing the VGA wire was loose.

The next day he told me the monitor didn't work and he wanted it replaced. I email acompinc.com and they say the monitor is warranted direct through the manufacturer. I call Dell, and they say it isn't, because I did not buy it from them.

I emailed acompinc.com again late tonight, but I'm sure I won't get a replacement from them. Don't think I'll get one from Dell. So I guess I have to fix his, or buy him a new one.

I spoke with his father for hours on the phone like 4 months ago when he was going to buy his other son a new computer, and I would not be surprised if he purposely broke the monitor to give me shit. But I don't really know him, never seen him, and not going to accuse anyone especially since the monitor was refurbished. But he was such an ass when I talked to him. He ended up going with a dell :rolleyes: and I'm glad I didn't have to talk to him when I made the computer for his other son.



I was just wondering if it sounds possible to fix. If I just have to re-solder the connections for the VGA wire, I can do that easy. I understand the dangers of working on a CRT.

I'll be heading back to his town in two weeks, so I can't look at it right now. But apparently his dad is "like really pissed" right now, so I'm still working on a temporary resolution.
 
he says now he can't get it to work at all. I'm guessing it had a loose connection, and he (or his dad) pulled it out completely.

do any of you think that's the problem and I can fix it if I reconnect it?
 
Well as for the 2 little black horizontal lines, these are normal on a trinitron monitor (I have the Dell p990 19inch which is a Sony trintron monitor) and are generally only visible on a white background. As for the monitor not working after it said no signal once, sounds like a loose connection.
 
the 2 lines are called damper wires and they hold up the aperture grill on trinitron monitors. its basically the shadow of the wires. like the above post said its really only noticeable when the monitor is displaying something bright or something white.
it doesnt sound to me like the kid has the connections right or something. be sure and test it thoroughly before getting it fixed or sending it back for a replacement.

Yeah but you REALLY have ot be llking for them. I have 2 trinitrons and they are BARELY noticeable.

That is unless you are one of those people that stares at white screens all the time (like those LCD owners that stare at black screens just to complain how bad the backlighting is :p ).
 
Ok I feel better about those two lines now. The way he described it, it seemed something was very wrong. I told him to just not think about it and he wouldn't notice it, but he would always tell me how the lines were still there whenever I talked to him. I had two lines on one of my ooooold huge ass CRT but thought it was just damaged (got it from where my dad works, and it was already in bad condition).

Bleh?, I got him that same monitor, the p990

Hope it's just a loose connection that I can fix when I get back.
