My CRT just died, I need a new LCD moniter for cheap. A 19" or 20" is preferred something with good contrast ratio and good response time. I can't really detect ghosting on my other 15" with 25 ms. Maybe 16ms is great. I will be using it for gaming and movies and everyday use. Nothing more then $500 bucks. I've heard of the 2005FPW but I hear that it has a lot of technical problems like backlight leaking and dead pixels. Deep blacks and great color is what I want. Anything along those guidelines, with an exception or two.
Your help is greaty appreciated, Thanks.

anyone? also should i get a new monitor now, since that bullsh*t HDCP isn't on it

Any day Dell will have the 2005FPW on sale again ... check out slickdeals.net often for the posting

I know but should i take the risk, I keep hearing bad things about it. And I'm not to sure about widescreen. When you put in a full screen DVD will there be black bars on the 2 sides.

i decided against the 2005fpw because of the widescreen and all the quality issues. and yes, if you put in a full screen dvd (why would you buy a fullscreen dvd in the first place?) it will have bars on the sides. i'll just quote a post i made in a similar thread earlier...

i was asking this same question about a month ago(this is my first lcd). i decided on the viewsonic vp191b after about a month of research. it's 19", 1280x1024, 8ms (g2g) and under 500 bucks. got mine from newegg for ~460.00. so far, this monitor ROCKS. i have zero complaints about it. i'd never go back to a crt. it's sooo crisp and clear. text/webpages/computer use is outstanding. i've played the following games and haven't noticed any ghosting: half-life2, kotor2, return to castle wolfenstein, quake2, hitman2... all wonderful. picture is amazing...great colors...nice blacks (not crt black, but very acceptable) just do a search in this forum for vp191b. i've never read anything but glowing reviews on it. have fun... :D

most widescreen DVD's have signifigant black bars on top/bottom as well. It's not even close to full screen. In order to be almost full screen it has to have 1.85 aspect ratio. This is a bit disapointing. But i still enjoy widescreen gaming.

All you have to do is change the aspect ration of the video bein played to 16 : 9 ... most players have this option

Wrong, Trust me i've looked. I've used both PowerDVD 6 and WinDVD 7, niether have any sort of option. And even if they did it would be nothing more then Pan And Scan. You can do this on a 4:3 screen as well. The black bars are almost as large as they are on a 4:3 screen, and there's nothing you can do about it, you can Pan And Scan but then your not really seeing much more then you would on a regualr 4:3 screen. it's still signifigantly cropping the video. The only way to get full screen that's been sucessful for me is using Media Player Classic and using it's Pan And Scan/Stretch options. But again, the cropping is signifigant. Don't kid yourself.

Regards,
Mike

yea but the VP191 highest res is 1280 X 1024 which is only one up from what I have, I wanted like a 1600 X 1200 screen but those seem non-existent because of the widescreen which im not overly excitied about.

I was hesitant too, but I went for it anyway and haven't been more happy with a purchase. Yeah, there is a bit of blacklight bleeding but man people are too picky. For the price I DARE you to find a better LCD.

Wrong. I use PowerDVD 5 and with a Fullscreen DVD I can set it to 16:9. Not sure WTF Pan and Scan is. Nice try though.

Mike

Pan And Scan is exactly that, the video is zoomed in and paned to fit your screen. Similir to the "This video has been modified from it's original version, it has been formatted to fit this screen" that's Pan and scan, though done from the factory.

I don't have PowerDVD 5, that software is about 2 or 3 years old. I use Power DVD 6, and WinDVD 7. Niether have this option. Though if you claim PowerDVD 5 has it perhaps i'll have to dig around and try to find this old version and see wtf your talking about. Im almost 100% certain what your seeing is a modified Pan And Scan picture though. It's not the complete image. Furthermore it's a well known, and well documented fact that widescreen DVD don't take up the entire screen on Widescreen displays without P&S. Do a little research eh?

Edit: I hope im wrong, I'd love to have my DVD's take up the full screen but i've tried many options and it's just not possible. If there is a way besides Pan And Scan /Cropping that someone knows of, please enlighten me.

well, all 19" LCDs have a native res of 1280x1024. you'll have to get a 20" for 1600x1200. more $$

Surely somebody here has an answer for me, where are "Most" of these DVD players (Software) that magically adjust aspect ratio's and don't stretch/crop the image. C'mon im dying to know.

*hint* they don't exist.

yeah that is what I thought, and come to think of it Power DVD 6 and WinDVD 7 have absolutely horrible pan/scan/crop options. I can't even stretch/crop/zoom an image to full screen with the new versions. It was posible with older versions, but using that I lose Trimension which is some pimp ass tech. PowerDVD is a little better, it's Pan/scan options at least make the image a little bigger, but the ones in WinDVD do absolutely nothing, Im thinking this is because Im on a widescreen and those where made for 4:3 screens.

I have the latest Divx Player, Radlight, Winamp, and PowerDvd and they all have a 16 : 9 option which does the trick for me

I use Divx Player the most and it 16 : 9 everything nice

I found the option for PowerDVD 6. Least now i can stretch/crop stuff with it, thanks

Guys, guys were a bit off topic here. Any more 20",19" screen suggestions.

already gave you a perfect match to what you're looking for as per your first post. if you're looking for something with res higher than 1280x1024, you'll have to look at 20" lcds. all 19" will have 1280x1024.
