Let's say I buy the same video card, except one has 2 gb and one has 1 gb - how does that interact with Xfire? How does use or interact with dissimilar video memory amounts?

Just get 2 with the same amount of memory now. Is your sig up to date or do you already have another card? If your buying 2 right now just get 2 with the same amount of vram. Pointless to buy cards with mismatched vram amounts.

sig is a bit out of date, i currently have 8 gb ram, a q9550 (at 4.0 ghz) on the way. Video card is the final upgrade but I have not bought anything yet.

So let's say hypothetically speaking you happen to have a 1GB GTX 6870 and want to buy a 2GB 6870. That's a excellent idea if you plan to upgrade both to 2gb. What you could do is crossfire the 2 cards and put the 1gb for sale online, once it sells you them use the money toward a second 2gb 6870.

In your case it seems like your not already invested in a card so will buy 2. Just get 2 cards with the same amount of vram. Buy a little more than you think you need in terms of performance delivered so your not wanting to upgrade in 3 or 4 months time.
