Crossfire without using CCC possible?

Kind of a noob with ATI so if this is common knowledge, forgive me.

I was reading a thread over at rage3d forums and somebody said they were using the new beta drivers (which don't include CCC) and that he was happy because Crossfire was working and that the 2nd card PP(??) issue was fixed.

I was confused because when I had my 4870's, I was under the impression that the only way to enable Crossfire was through CCC.

Is there another way?

What was happening with second cards?? PP?? power play or something like that idk??

Got a 4890 coming and a Crossfire motherboard. I would like to try Crossfire again. My experience with 4870-512 Crossfire was not good (never had a problem with SLI). I had to turn off Catalyst AI a lot to get problems to go away which of course turns off Crossfire. IF there's a way to run it without having to use CCC or Catalyst AI, that sounds great to me.
 
Crossfire works fine without CCC.

Any settings you would usually manipulate with CCC are still in the registry, it's just that without CCC you'd have to manually adjust them yourself, or use Ati Tray Tools to change them...

Does ATT work with Vista 64 now? I think I remember reading that the author hated Vista or something like that. Maybe a trip to Guru3D is in order.

I was planning on using RivaTuner so that I could manipulate the voltage using the plugin.
(was doing a little reading last night) :D Gotta go find out if RivaTuner also allows you to enable Crossfire.
