I have a 290 reference with the Geil HSF which does fine.

Looking to buy a 290x to either replace it or add to it.

The question is...... will the 290 hold back the 290x that I wont see the performance gains equivalent to the $250+ I could get for the card if I sold it.

I play Bf4 only on 3 1080p monitors in eyefinity.

my rig is a 3930k + z79 motherboard with 32gb of DDR1300 with 2 intel 540 240gb drives in RAID 0

I am currently playing BF4 on medium settings to get 60FPS with the 290.

thanks guys for the wisdom

Was this supposed to be 3 1080p monitors in Eyefinity?

And I'm not sure why you'd go to the trouble of replacing your 290 with a 290X. You'll see minimal gains (like what, 10-15%?), and that extra money you're gonna spend is kinda pointless unless you get a 290X for the same price you would have gotten the 290.

290 + 290X = 2x290, since the 290X will perform only as good as the 290 it's with.

yes i fixed it... okay thanks. I have not had good experience with crossfire in my limited us of it in the past with 2 6950's and it was easier (less noise, less heat and similar real world performance) to get a 7970 at the time.

I wanted to get the 290x because my 290 is not great at OCing and I would hope to get a better OCing card to make more of an improvement in performance with a stock 290 vs a OCed 290x

but it might be better to get a 290 and crossfire it... thanks for your input

Not true, i did exactly this setup and flashing my 290x to a 290p lowered performance as much as expected. The 290x will run at its full potential.

Ah sorry then, I stand corrected. I was kinda wondering if 290X + 290 would garner any benefits, since 290X + 295X2 seems to keep the speeds of both even if the 290X is clocked slightly higher. Thanks for the info

so I am not getting what you guys are saying.... are you saying that a 290+290x would provide better performance than 2x290's?

Yes.

I dont think i could've been clearer.

I suggest you read posts.

They fixed that a long time ago.

Basically a 290 + 290x will perform like 2x290.5s. somewhere in between the 2.

Great thanks. And I do read the posts.

I asked for clarification and googled 290p

I see "full potential" but I was unclear on your wording.

Thanks for the help

I had that setup for a while, then I sold the 290. The main issues, if you go for non reference design, will be heat and noise. Sapphire 290 tri-x, which I had went up to like 86c, and it was clearly audible. The card I put in lower slot - 290x xfx black, would also get noisy as hell, and reach up to 90c. If you want to do crossfire on amd, you either need blower reference or water, or a motherboard with more than 3 pcie spaces between cards.

Thanks for your real world experience with the setup.

I had similar issues with 2x 7970s a couple years back.

Perhaps th use of the AIO water coolers and the GPU adapters would be a good fit.

I have a corsair 850w PSU and doing the real world math I get about 500-600w of system use with my 3930k and those 2 cards

I am at 450w use with the 3930k+ 290 now according to a kill-a-watt and my UPS.

I know most advise for a 1000w or higher with dual cards...

Not sure. I'll probably try it on Thursday when my 290x gets here and then sell the 290 if I doesn't work well.
