CrossFire - What am I doing wrong?

Have Dell U3011. Upgraded from 1x GTX 470 to 2x 6950's. Games are running slower, bad frame rates. I enabled crossfire in the CCC and my PSU can support this.

So... what am I doing wrong?
 
Which games? What settings? What drivers? Do you have the CAP profiles installed?

You really need to provide some more information for anyone help you...
 
Uninistall all ati stuff and nvidia stuff in the control panel, then boot into safe mode and run driver sweeper and remove all the ati and nvidia stuff. Then boot normally and install the latest ati drivers + cap profile
 
I was trying to take it one step at a time and make sure I had the install right.

I should also mention I upgraded in order to maintrain streaming FPS. The games I have tested with and without the stream thus far are Tribes: Ascend Beta, Diablo 3 Beta, League of Legends.

I'm getting cursor lag too, it's not just the kind of thing where I can't spin my mouse around and headshot someone. It's terrible fps constantly in windowed mode, or just with Xsplit Broadcaster open.
 
Ok. Ran Phyxion driver sweeper in safe mode.

Booted back to desktop normally. Installed latest driver and CAP. Do I need to adjust overdrive values?

Like all people switching from Nvidia to AMD. You need to throughly remove the remaining AMD/Nvidia drivers from the OS. Use programs like driver sweeper ( http://www.phyxion.net/Driver-Sweeper/Driver-Sweeper/Version-3-2-0/ ) and remove everything. Including PhysX and such. Also make sure you motherboard/videocard bios are up to date. If this still fails, do a complete system re-format and see if that resolved your issue. If that doesn't work one of your cards might be defective or the Crossfire connector isn't properly depressed on the videocards.

Crossfire doesn't function in windowed mode. Can you give us more specific information? What's your GPU usage on each card while playing? Compare FPS with crossfire disabled and then enabled?
 
Are you using AA? Which AA mode do you have it set to? In the ATI drivers this is set in two places and you could easily tank performance by accidentally setting SSAA or something.
 
Well that's a big bummer. Do nvidia cards in SLI work in windowed mode? In order to stream on own3d you need to use Xfire Broadcaster and run games in windowed mode (to prevent UI flickering).

Ok Specifics:
Using enhanced mode AA. Standard. 2X AA option in the Catalyst Control Center.
Game list: League of Legends(LoL), StarCraft 2(SC2), Tribes Ascend(TA), Diablo 3(D3), APB Reloaded(APB)
I tried to test Skyrim but I have horrible face flickering and UI flickering just when trying to play Fullscreen even only on high settings. This did not happen at all with the single GTX 470.
Diablo 3 is down for the night.

Streaming my desktop can show up to 55% Activity in the AMD overdrive tab. Yikes. 0% power at all times in the CCC menu, is that normal ?

The big issue that wasn't happening with my single GTX 470 is the catastrophic frame loss when streaming. The stuttering is just unplayable really.

(I will test crossfire disabled tomorrow, if necessary)

Would I have been better off upgrading my 470 to a 580 and staying with 1 card? Why is the crossfire having so much trouble just running a streaming program? As I understood it crossfire'd 6950's should be able to run my 2560x1600 at 60 FPS pretty much no matter what.

Nope, sorry man, but as far as I know SLI doesn't work in windowed mode either. You can see the second GPU dropping to 0% usage in windowed mode, obviously. Truthfully I have no idea what's causing the massive drop in FPS while streaming. I'm just not familiar with the program. One 6950 should be faster than a 470, so it may be some issue between the program and the card. Have you tried disabling crossfire altogether and running off one card? (you may have mentioned this in your first post, but I don't recall)

Regardless, if you built the computer for streaming and you have to run windowed mode while streaming, there is no point in running two cards. Your best bet is to get the fastest single GPU you can, and for now that's the 580. I'd say wait a month if you can for the 79xx cards, but with the current incompatibilities you're experiencing, I don't know if it'll be worth the wait.

Well, I tried a couple things with crossfire disabled. Things run fire fullscreen or windowed (probably marginally better FPS than the 470, but I haven't tested everything because I had to come into work) but for whatever reason just having the streaming program open destroys all FPS even for a simple game like LoL. I never noticed an FPS drop while streaming LoL with the GTX 470 so this is very disappointing. (My 470 would bog down a little when streaming D3 or TA and that was my reason for upgrading.) I guess I'm going to have to revert back to the 470, or look into getting a 580. HD 79XX will presumably have higher performance than the 580, but like you said Calwen, who knows if it will give me the same problem as these 6950s. I guess my rig is an nvidia thug 4 life.
 
Well this sucks, who wants to buy 2x 6950's :( I was going to flash to 6970's too...
