Wondering if it's really worth it to get a crossfire card ?
I hear they take a lot of power, and are hard to keep cool... I definitely want to buy a computer that I won't have to upgrade again, so this is a long term computer investment.
Is there that big of a difference for crossfire? Any suggestions on a particular ATI card?
I'm looking for a gaming card in particular, thank you.
 
I've got an x1900xtx running slightly overclocked and it can handle every game I throw at it, and this is on a 24 inch acer lcd with native res at 1920x1200. Now, question is, are you going to wait for the new chipset and dx10 hardware, or just grab something right now.
 
OP - you do realize that crossfire is TWO graphics cards right? Maybe I'm reading your post wrong, but it seems like you think it 1 card. Now... provided you have have a board that is crossfire capable, it really depends on the resolution you are running. If you are running anything less than 1600x1200 then there is NO reason to get crossfire. You won't really gain anything from it provided you go with a higher end single card. If you are above 16x12 you may want to consider getting a higher end card and seeing how it performs. If you can run the quality levels you want and are happy stick with it. If you aren't... add a second card. No need to buy both cards at the same time to see what you need/want.
 
Like Poncho said, it just is NOT worth it unless you're gaming at a high resolution.

If you don't want to upgrade often get a flagship card. Personally, I'd rather have a new upper-range card every year than a flagship card every two years.

I'd also recommend waiting for G80 or R600 just for future DX10 compatibility, seeing as you don't want to upgrade often.

I understand you need to purchase two cards for Crossfire.

So which should I wait for? I'd prefer to spend under $400, I guess i'm going to get a single card.

Looking at the 1900XT, you guys say wait for something else?
 
Grab a x1950Pro when they're available... should be around $300
 
Or you can grab the X1950XTX for as little as $419 right now.

with crossfire mode you can play oblivion in max settings at 1600 X 1200 resolution

Exactly. I am considing Crossfire so I can play Company of Heroes and Oblivion with Max settings in 1680x1050.
 
With dual X1950XTX's you can play almost anything damn near maxed out at 1680x1050 easily.

A single card will not play Oblivion maxed out at your native res, not sure about those other games although I doubt Fear from what I have read.

Don't get me wrong, I love my X1900XT, but I want minimum 30 fps in Company of Hereos at 1680x1050 and I don't even get that at 1280x800 unfortunately with a single card. Its close, but when you start getting a ton of units on screen, I start dipping into the low 20 fps even at 1280x800. This is why I want to do Crossfire. I just don't want to spend $450 for it right now until I start seeing the DX10 cards DX9 performance numbers. Early rumors are that those numbers are not a substancial leap over top of the line DX9 cards and I really have no intention of moving to Vista for at least another year, so DX9 performance is what is important to me.

A single X1950XTX can not do FEAR maxed out either. I tried it already. Not at the native resolution of this display anyway.

Yeah you can. I had dual 7900GTX's and found that when I moved to a single X1950XTX, I wanted more. I grabbed another one, and it blows my SLi setup out of the water.

I was amazed at how good a single X1950XTX really is.
