Now, I know dongle/cable-less crossfire is possibly; I did it with my card and a friend's x1900 XTX before, right after the 6.8 drivers came out supporting this (and the results were fairly decent, about an 80% improvement in performance in 3DMark06), but what is the current state of this technology? How much of an increase am I actually going to see? Do the latest drivers still support software crossfire?

Crossfire: some tips for a dual GPU noob

trying crossfire ith my new rig but cant get it to work the computer shops in town are not helping at all and tell me crossfire is not very popular anymore trying to use 2 2600xt but it wont allow me to crossfire keeps asking for another card.. The cards are xfire compatable and mt mobo supports xfire but still does not work any suggestions ? should i be using other pci 2600 xt cards Iam using a gigabyte mobo and its supposed to be xfire compatible.

In Crossfire mode your 1950 will have to slow down to match the speed of the 1900. I've heard that dongleless Crossfire was supported by the lower end cards, but I've not heard of anyone that got the higher end cards to work, so if you are sure you did, more power to you.
As for performance gains, like SLI, Crossfire works best when there is a game specific profile. As I understand it, it should go into a tiling mode Crossfire when no specific profile is available, but we've all seen the benchmarks where there is no improvement with Crossfire over a single card, and since the 1950 has to drop speed to match the 1900, you could potentially see an FPS decrease in some instances.
And to the best of my knowledge, ATi has not dropped the dongleless Crossfire support from the drivers. If they have, you may have to go back to an older version.

Did you hook up both connectors? The ATi cards have two connectors, and you are supposed to connect both of them.
It would also help to tell us what board you have. ATi chipsets support Crossfire, as do the Intel chipsets from the 975x on up; the P965 may work, but again, this is a driver trickery workaround.

He has the Abit P35 something, anyways we have already done the required research, and have figured out that dongleless crossfire DOES NOT work on split level motherboards (ie 16x/4x), such as the P35, or p965, only on fill level dual PCIe (16x, 16x OR 8x, 8x) thou some driver hackery may be possible, we haven't figured out that yet.
FYI, I'm the friend that we did the X1950 and x1900 so0ftware crossfire in my rig which was a a8r32-mvp back in august of LAST year (2006)
