At what resolution is crossfire recommended? is it a waste to run xfire at 1680x1050? or just go right to 1920x1080?

6950 crossfire owner here. I typically run at 5040x1050 resolution and typically never get stutter, but if I ever play one a single monitor (1650x1050) I will get stutter in a few of the games.

RadeonPro can disable crossfire for some games to remove stutter from games that are over-rendered.
The best fix for stutter for me is to increase your graphics, and force AA 8x, force max settings basically( RadeonPro max settings ).
I definitely think 69xx crossfire is a waste at 1680x and 1920x, but 68xx CF would be fine. I would recommend a single 69xx over two 68xx though.

If you get crossfire, RadeonPro software is the best thing you'll ever use. You can fix a number of stutter/graphical issues/slow fps by switching crossfire profiles or disabling it all together.
Crossfire is for enthusiasts and the not easily angered.. be ready to be break something when your favorite games run better on a single card vs two.

At 1680x1050 crossfire is very much a waste except in one or two very specialised games. Otherwise, proper use of crossfire only begins at 1920x1080 upwards.

Anything above 1920 x 1200 is where you'll see start to see the improvement. I wouldn't consider crossfire for anything below 1920 x 1080. Unless it was two older or low end cards.

I run crossfire 6870s on a 1920x1080 display and I love it. I can max the AA on almost any game and keep the fps above 60.

The question is too vague IMO. Adding a 2nd (or more) GPU is going to benefit you in any case where the single GPU is insufficient. At what resolution that occurs is going to depend on the game in question, what settings you run, as well as other variables (do you play with 16 people or 64?).

To try and make some kind of blanket statement that crossfire works best above a certain resolution is silly.

I agree 100%, I'd also go as far as saying that crossfire is not a waste at any specific resolution. This depends on the user and what they intend to do and what type of performance they are looking for. If you want to max out or run at very high image quality at 1680x1050 there are several games that'll tax a crossfire setup and have your gpus at over 95% usage.

Metro 2033
Metro Last Light
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Crysis 2 DX11 HR Texture Pack
The Witcher 2
Battlefield 3

and there may be a few others.
