I've never gone with a SLI or Crossfire setup, but with the new ATI cards I'm thinking about it. I have to ask, how do the majority of games handle a dual card setup? Do the benefits outweigh any negatives?

I would say they do. As multigpu setups become more common, I think all games will be supporting sli and crossfire. I never had problems running multigpu setups. A lot of people in here are old school and think things never change when it comes to problems with multigpu setups, but things are changing. They still have a few problems, but the pros out weigh the cons.

Do most of the negatives consist of strangely lower FPS than you would expect for a dual card setup? Rather than not being able to actually play something.

No. Cons are that older games might not scale at all but since it's old, a current gpu would play it just fine. Other cons are more power, more heat, and some driver maintenance at worst.

Another issue is that dual cards seem to have a lower minimum fps compared to a single card of comparable power. Also, there's the issue of microstutter. But it's always been a thing that polarized the community due to that some could notice it and had their enjoyment tainted, and others honestly didn't know what the other half was talking about because it never bothered them. But as time goes on, AMD and Nvidia will put even more effort into multi-gpu set-ups, and developers will design the games around the fact.

Apparently you tend to skip over post by Brent on microsutter.

Unless I'm going insane, I don't see a post by Brent in this thread. If he posted it in another thread, then I probably did miss it. There are alot of post by alot of people, so I'm not going to reas what everyone says, even if it's a [H] editor/reviewer.

I can honestly say I've never heard of microstutter. When I google it, I get links to forum discussions from early 2008.
