So I'm pricing a new build, and I know I want a crossfire capable motherboard for a future upgrade. I'm looking at getting a 3850 512mb video card. When I do go to get a second card for crossfire, must it be identical to the one I buy now? Or does it just need to be the same GPU?
 
No, I dont believe they have to be the same for CF. You can CF a 3850 and 3870.

If you could, I would recommend a 3870x2. Having 2 GPUs on 1 PCB works way better than having 2 separate cards.
 
Thats alittle pricey for me... thats why I'm doing the 3850 for now. I planned on using my current Antec 500watt psu in my new build. When I go crossfire, I assume I'll need more power, correct?
 
Well actually for 2 3850s I think 500watts may be enough. If you have a reliable PSU (which you do, antec's are awesome) then I believe 500 watts would be enough for crossfiring 2x 3850s.
 
The Earthwatts line are Seasonic built, so they're fairly reliable.
Can't say I agree with the "Antec is awesome" bit -- at least not with regard to PSUs.
Their TruePower, TruePower 2.0, and Basiq lines are notoriously unreliable.

If you get a new PSU, I'd strongly recommend something from Corsair, PC Power & Cooling, Etasis, Zippy, Seasonic, Silverstone, Enermax's Galaxy series (only), Thermaltake's Thoughpower series (only), or Coolermaster's Pure Power Pro series (only).

The Antec Earthwatts and TruePower Trio lines are ok, but there are much better options out there for the same price.
