My friend is offering to sell me a crossfire setup real cheap (hes jumping on an 8800... sigh for upgradeitis...) anyhow... its an X1950XTX and an X1950XTX crossfire edition... question is, how many monitors can i hook up to this setup?
 
1 monitor but you could always disable crossfire so you can use 3 monitors then re-enable crossfire when you want to game on your primary monitor. To my knowledge it's a fairly simple process to disable and re-enable crossfire (correct me if I'm wrong).
 
When you enable crossfire for gaming it automatically disables the other monitors and only runs on the default monitor (monitor hooked up to the dongle out). I run a dual monitor setup without any problems and a buddy of mine runs a 3 monitor setup without any problems.

This info is only for a dongle crossfire setup. I'm not sure how it works with software enabled crossfire or with the SLI style bridge connector.

crap so i would still need a second video card to run 4 monitors no matter what eh?

and what is the software crossfire? no dongle? would that even work?
