Crossfire Question - Temps

I get around 81-85c (I forget now) with 35% fan using a single card, but the same settings; same resolution, etc.

When I run Crossfire however, temps go to 89c and 90% fan. (This is in BC2)

Any idea why? Also, this is the bottom card which isn't being moved, and is not restricted by the above card.

It's normal for crossfire rigs to get hotter on the temps. Even with the bottom card not being restricted to airflow it can still get hotter by the temps of the top card and the temp inside the case. 2 cards = more heat building up in the case versus just one card
 
Depends which cards you're using, and who makes them. Non-reference cards typically suffer badly in crossfire, especially if you have only single or double slot spacing. 89C is within normal range for crossfire (85-91C) but it's the 90% fan speed figure that's excessively high. If it's non-reference though, this is perfectly normal, as most non-reference cards are designed to run to 100% fan speed when used in crossfire.
 
I'm not sure why you say that. The reference runs Much hotter.
The non-reference does about 80c / 35%, "and" it's blocked by the lower card.

The TIM on the reference is not bad. I changed it with AS5 and get about the same temps.

What's your slot spacing and the airflow in your case like? It's normal to see 89C in crossfire on an HD6950, but it should be around 50-60% fan speed not 90%.
 
Cards are in 2 and 4, very little spacing between the video cards..
But the hot card is NOT the one blocked by the other. The hot card has unrestricted airflow.

I have HAF 932.
Ambient 77f.

I had the same issue when I first got my 6950s, changing the cards around made a difference to where the hot card now matches the other card. I'm not sure how or why, but that's what worked for me.. maybe the one card prefers to be on top :p

Looking at your pic it seems like GPU 1 is acting weird... 200% usage and the tach rpm numbers are insane...
 
Have you verified the fan speed in GPUZ? There could potentially be a problem with the fan in the HIS card.
 
Where do you see 200% usage on gpu 1?


Samuel, I've verified the fan speed outside of crossfire in this manner:

I manually increase fan speed, and I Hear that sucker roar, she's loud.

Well, it does this in crossfire: she roars.. It's quite loud.

Any case, I found a buyer for my HIS.. I'm tired of ATi, tired of eyefinity incompatibility, tired of broken CCC, tired of hot 6950, and most of all tired of ATi.. did I say that already? :) Thanks gents.

It's probably a dodgy card, might have incorrectly applied TIM or an ill-fitting cooler, you shouldn't ever see temps that high in the unrestricted airflow position. To be honest though, it's starting to sound like you resigned yourself to be rid of the cards before you even started.
 
I have tried quite a bit, a lot of things I haven't mentioned here. But I did mention TIM.

It might be something like a faulty temperature sensor then. Honestly, if it were me I'd just try and RMA the HIS card and get another. If you think that nvidia cards never suffer any of these problems, you'd be mistaken.
 
No, I don't assume that.. But I do assume their control panel will work, that more games will work properly with nVidia (There are too many games that just don't work well with ATi.. Or should I say, the games I play.), and that they'll have physx.
 
Well if you actually care about PhysX, your mind was made up long ago. Anyone who actually cares about PhysX probably lives and dies by the nvidia brand.

PhysX is just a nice plus.

I could put my GTS 450 in this PC to get PhysX, and may until I can get rid of this second 6950.

On your pic from afterburner it shows Max for GPU1 Usage is 200 so at some point it supposedly ran at that, GPU2 Max Usage shows 97
 
Oh I see it now.
It does that for a brief moment when switching on or off crossfire, and possibly other times.
Just a reporting error.
