I currently have a HD 4850. I want to build a new system with a P45 board and E8400. Now, I can either sell my 4850 and buy a pair of 4870 512MB. I game with a resolution of 1920x1200. I play games like Far Cry 2, GRID, Crysis. Would crossfire 4870 512MB be overkill for 1920x1200? Should I just keep my 4850 and just buy another 4850 and run crossfire? I have a Diamond 4850. Will it work with any other brand? Thanks for the help!

Crossfire Question : Enlighten Me

It will work with another brand. If you can spend a bit more $$$ and get an X38/X48 mo-bo since P45 chipset is not very good with xfire setup. I have 2 X 4870 and it's not overkill if you game at 1920X1200.

P45 would have no problems at all with CF. 4870/4850 have no problems at all with the bandwidth provided on an 8x PCI-E slot.

I run 2x 4870 512MB on a P45 and I game on 1920x1080, it definetly could use more horsepower in my opinion for some of these newer games coming out but it definetly does give me a badass experience.
The P45 doesn't choke it, but I think for some of the newer games the 4870's are showing some of their weaker sides especially when I get up to 8xAA.

I could be mistaken but I seem to recall a couple of benchmarks when P45 was introduced that were less than flattering when using 4870 in xfire. 4850's didn't seem to be affected as much.

When they did alot of those it was with the 512 variant, I didn't see any performance degradation when I picked mine up, but there may be with the 1gb model.
If you're going to Crossfire cards, get the 1GB versions to do it. 512MB of RAM (since each card holds the same data) is going to choke the performance two GPUs have to offer.
