I've read before that you don't need 2 bridges for crossfire to work. Is this true? I'm looking at picking up a second 4850 but it doesn't look like it comes with one.
 
You can do crossfire bridgeless, but you lose alot of the speed as they communicate through the PCI Express bus and not the bridges.

2 needed for 3 cards

1 bridge to rule them all in your case
 
Depends which card you are xfiring.

The HD4890 and HD4850 require 2 bridges for maximum performance.

HD4770 requires 1 for stability and performance.


That is all I have experience with.
