Crossfire preview up at toms

They seem to have an "It's better than SLI" take on it due to its (debatable) flexibility. Should be interesting in the coming weeks, that's for sure (or whenever the actual performance numbers get released).

I like the flexibility of this a lot more than SLI. It would be nice to have a 6800GT and then put, say, a cheap 6600GT or 6800NU with it to take the load off.

Though, the inevtiably inflated cost of the Crossfire edition cards should offset this price difference, heh.

CrossFire > SLI

All i can say is nah nah nah nah nah nah

Yeah, because the benchmarks ATi released are totally unbiased, just like the nVidia "initial benchmarks" of SLI claiming 2x performance in almost everything

You cant say one is better than the other until CrossFire comes out.

exactly

But the flexibility is good.
Just buy an master card. Then get an X800XL, or XT sometime later.

Looks like ATI did good

from what i'v seen it doesnt look impressive at all from a pure score point of view because there are no details.

But 4 different render modes including super AA? More flexability? If anything this will most definitly cause Nvidia to step back and look at SLI. I know if i had just got an SLI setup and something this nice came out i'd be feeling pretty insecure. Although im sure most people will deny it and ping it off with "I have SLI now".

I read through the information on crossfire and it looks very well done, baring that it comes out to some good numbers in games... It's certainly better than SLi.

You feel insecure about computer hardware? God, you are a fanb0y.

I like this little pic

I want benchmarks :(
And there isn't to much info there(I read german too :p) about the preformance, it's useless to me...
Just like all the G70 "previews" are useless to me...

Terra - Only thing that matter to me is preformance...

Then these previews will probably leave you disappointed.

Looks like scissor will be best for identical cards, and Super AA for different cards. AFR both, and super tiling for both.

I think so too...
But discussing the design, with no benchmarks...I mean...what's the point..you could be wrong..or you could be right..how do you know?

I think it will only increase the FUD..sadly :(

Terra - PR is not my cup of tea..remember all to well the FX-series..

So how does this work. They ship you guys a bunch of slides and pictures and you just comment on it? Did they give you guys a CrossFire rig to benchmark yet? Are you just not allow to release the benchmarks till some other date?

I believe Brent gets preview samples to test and compile his article with so on the day NDA expires he can post his review and generate buzz/desire for the upcoming product. :)

I believe most things like this are now staged NDAs....one time for when they can start talkign about the what/how (they could be separate) and then another day for showing its performance.

Now do I really want to buy an ATi Chipset? Sigh

I wish people would goddamn READ about the ATI Chipsets before bashing them:

For their first effort at an AMD Athlon 64 chipset, we can only say we are beyond impressed with the ATI RX480/RS480 chipset. No matter how we compare the performance the ATI RX480 is competitive or a bit faster than the best Socket 939 boards we have tested at AnandTech. That in itself would be reason enough to suggest a long, hard look at the ATI RX480 chipset, but there's more. ATI also did their homework in this go round; delivering a board that will excite any enthusiast who gives it a whirl. nVidia got to their position of prominence in the AMD world with solid boards that catered to Enthusiasts. ATI appears to finally understand that pleasing the OEM market is not the same as exciting Enthusiasts. The ATI Bullhead is a monster overclocker with amazing performance, and ATI deserves huge praise for their efforts and their results with their first AMD chipset.

Its a GOOD Chipset people

Not to mention DFI will be one of the first out the door with the RD482 board....

What if you are an Intel guy... and <3 Intel Chipsets with their processors?

I never said ATi was bad. Its just another alternative that they are forcing you to get if you want SLi.... Same with Nvidia for intel but for AMD, you really have no choice.

But Who knows, Maybe It will be a great chipset, but I dont consicder them a big contender yet.... in the Chipset market anyway. I <3 Ati Videocards tho

Wtf?

This is an AMD 64 CHIPSET!!!

They are making one for Intel too.

And I never said it was a bad chipset... I said I dont want to buy one... there is a difference

Oh, woops, I thought you said "Whate, are you an intel guy? And love there cipsets?"

Any wahst the reason you dont want an ATI Chip? Dont like good performance?

Master card? Oh i can see the price gaudging now.

X850 XT-PE $549
X850 Master card $699

As long as you get it through ATi (and they're the only ones making them), the price will be MSRP.

Yes, but who's to say the msrp won't already be set higher?

ATi....did you even read the preview at toms or here?

$549 for the X850 CF Edition (520/1080, I think)
$299 for the X800 CF Edition 256MB (400,980)
$249 for the X800 CF Edition 128MB (400,980)

im sorry man but you're acting like a total jackass and ignoring the blatant in your face facts. This is where all the Nvboys show their true colors with stupid remarks like yours.

We;; they DID say its better then ALL the other chipsets they tested with AMD 64s

But its ATI, so it sucks

Anand's, [H]'s link is in the first post...two good READs (can't truly read a babelfished translation, only interpret, IMO).

I've seen a lot of information and speculation that there is really nothing in the ati chipset that allows for the operation of "crossfire". With that said, hopefully ATI releases the lock on their chipset if they really want it to be popular.

ATI has given us the indication that CrossFire should work on Intel Chipsets as well as their own. This could give new life to those Intel designs originally targeted at SLI. Though not explicitly stating that CrossFire will work in an NVIDIA SLI board, it definitely seems possible. From an adoption/compatibility standpoint, ATI is certainly "evaluating other options".

Yay, go Intel and VIA!

Interestingly, you won't be locked into an ATI chipset if you want to run CrossFire. ATI will allow CrossFire to work with Intel chipsets, and is also in talks with NVIDIA to get CrossFire to cooperate with the nForce platform. Compatibility with VIA chipsets isn't a priority for ATI, although it may be more likely than a cross-compatibility agreement with NVIDIA.
