Until R520, Crossfire is pointless IMHO...but let's be honest...I wouldn't buy an ATi card if it came with a free bj and a porsche...

I don't get how this is an "improvement" for AMR Brent? I assume you know as well as I (likely better) that with Coolbits enabled you can set nVidia's SLI to default to None, SFR, AFR1, or AFR2?

As SFR is usually the most compatible, I have that set as my default. It doesn't sound to me like AMR is that much different except for that lame tiling and questionable "Super AA" mode for the games of yore.

With Cross fire Rollo it does not just set a random mode for everygame, it analyzes every game and determines which mode would be the best. With Coolbits, to get the maximum performance you would have to bench every one of your games at every diffrent render mode to find which mode most of your games benifted from. Lol Lame Tiling, Until you have it I guess. Super AA is now questionable? Wow I thought you were a fan of pretty games and Lots of AA. Now that ATi taunts it as a main feature High AA is not so great anymore?

I see I mistook your response as a flame to me, sorry.

My general opinion stands though that it's late in the day to be selling SM2 cards in SLI, and defaulting to tiling isn't optimal.

I agree it would be a serious waste of money to run dual PS2.0+ cards today.
 
Rollo I dont doubt that dual PS2.0 cards is useless but I am simply defending ATI's implementation of the whole dual GPU solution. From what I have seen the first steps of ATIs version of SLi are allready much better than that of Nvidias.

Your behind the scenes profiles dont pick which mode of rendering based on any data other than that of the user. Lets face it no user can know exactly which mode of rendering would be the most effective for the majority of his/her games. With ATi's solution you get three benefits.

A. No guessing which rendering mode would be more effective as Catalyst AI takes care of that for you.
B. No downloading of a third party app, as everything is run through the drivers themself.
C. Highest level of performance in every game without the guessing or switching of rendering modes before you play the game.

If that's the case, what's all this talk of determining which is best for the game and setting appropriate feature flags and whatnot? I mean, all it's doing is defaulting to one method or the other based on what api it uses. Nothing more than I can do with limited knowledge by selecting it myself, or setting the default as rollo stated.

I mean, people are making it sound like it benchmarks the games in different modes on the fly and determines what works best. I don't remember reading that anywhere.

You do realize the Evans and Sutherlands cards use SuperTiling (often call SpatialTiling) correct? As well as SuperAA. These cards are used in high-end applications and simulators with up to 64 R300 chips, and they use SuperTiling and SuperAA.

I guess it's not so lame eh?

The feature flags remark was to the NV SLI cards. There are various settings that are associated with SFR and AFR with NV SLI that NV can set in the driver profiles on a per game basis. Sometimes straight NV SFR or AFR breaks certain things in a game or has issues, so they have to evaluate each game and set a special mode. Look in the NVAPPS.XML file and you will see this.

Catalyst AI determines what mode is best for what game with CrossFire. Don't ask me HOW it does that, I do not know, but I'll definitely find out when we get samples and I can test them, we should learn a lot more about exactly how that works then.

Right now it's important to know that all games by default that are D3D use SuperTiling and all OGL games by default use Scissor, UNLESS Catalyst AI determines that it would be better to run in Scissor or AFR mode for a certain game. With this method every game on the planet should receive the performance benefit of CrossFire in video card limited situations.

Nuts. I could swear I saw in one of these previews that Supertiling offered the least benfit, but I'm not finding it. :(

If I'm wrong I'll gladly admit it- could you post some benches for me to review?

Crossfire should be fun to see benchmarks from though.

If Super Tiling was as efficient as AFR and SFR, then there would be no need for AFR and SFR...because everything can run in super tiling right?

Super Tiling is only more compatible. Splitting textures across all those lines across the screen results in WAY more texture duplication in memory.

You are correct that Super Tiling is more compatible - AFR is the highest performing mode. But the texture duplication of SuperTiling is not as big a hit as you may think. There was a discussion at B3D on this and here are Dave's thoughts in the Crossfire preview -

SIMULATORS....vs...a monitor that just needs to show you temperatures going up, what direction you are going, ....you don't need antialiasing to show numbers. :rolleyes:

There is no 3D going on control panels!

It was just a metaphor...have we seen these simulators? Do we have any idea what kind of visuals they are producing?

I wouldn't assume that tile-rendering is in any way superior performance wise just becuase it was being used by E&S...compatible maybe...easy to work with maybe...but fastest...nope
 
Ati is still unproven in the chipset market to me, but only time will tell...

As for SLi and Crossfire right now, neither offer enough advantages for me to spend the extra dough yet.

Now if Nvidia gets SLi working on intel chipsets,
Which I read somewhere that they might be trying to do, then I might be ready to jump on the ship.

Actually yes I have.

Side by side comparsion though who knows because I don't have a laptop to compare say doom3 to ...tank...simulator...thing or flight...not microsoft...simulator :I (dont really have names or at least I don't pay attention to it :) or my own copy of simulator "Army"

Plus the resolution these things are at aren't like 20 inch lcd. talking about like 5 or 6 huge 70inch ones or full on dome rooms (make ya sick!). So it could easly be the monitors that just makes me drool :)

But I don't think Brent is saying it's superiour. Just not saying it's useless either.

fastest or not it's a proven technology

and apparently it must be fast enough for them if they are using it versus another rendering method, eh?

it isn't "lame" or "useless" as some here have claimed since it is being used in a very high-end application
