Crossfire Freezing

I am running a 7950 and a 7870 myst (both tahiti) in crossfire and I am having a issue were my system will completely freeze/lockup when I play a game; this happens randomly.

I was hoping someone here might know why this is happening or how to fix it?

My specs
Windows 7 64bit
asrock z77 pro3 (updated bios)
8gigs of memory
i5 3470
Running the latest amd drivers 13.12


Let me know if you need to know anything more, I hope I can at lest figure out why this happens.:(
 
Are those both Tahiti?

Anyway, my first thoughts are what are your temps? Are you actively monitoring them? Are the cards reference or open air? If they're open air, that could be an issue; open air coolers dump tons of heat in the case which can cause the upper card to become too hot over time, which will lead to instability over time. Generally speaking, reference blowers are preferable for CFX/SLI for this very reason - because of open air cards dumping tons of heat into the case.

I have direct experience with this while using 2 lightning cards in SLI, the upper card would always be 10-15C warmer than the lower card due to heat being dumped in the case. I was able to make it work, but I have a huge EATX case with nearly 12 fans, and I had to use manual fan settings to make the temps tenable in the long term. It wasn't "easy" to get working in my case, looking back I think I should have used reference.

Anyway, first suggestion is monitoring temps, and if that's an issue - improve your case air flow, increase manual fan settings, and worse come to worse then exchange the cards for reference blower designs. Blowers are far better for crossfire than open air.
 
Single screen or eyefinity? Have you tried reverting to an older driver version, perhaps? PSU is also a good question.

I'm not too familiar with mixed crossfire (only used same cards for xfire in the past), maybe someone else can comment on that. I know it's supposed to work, but I don't know if that could be an issue somehow. IMO, mixing cards with different timings/BIOS could be rife with issues, but again I don't have direct experience with mixed crossfire. I always thought it had to be same family (ie 79xx with 79xx as opposed to 78xx with 79xx - and I realize both are Tahiti, but different core configurations).
 
Sounds like your PSU may be lacking. I would test each card by itself for an extended gaming session. If no lock ups on either card by themselves, I would look at getting a new PSU as the first step.
 
just wanted to update you all since you all tried to help, thank you. Turns out it was not getting enough power; one of the pcie power cables became unplugged at some point. :rolleyes: but all its well now. Thanks all.
