Hello, a few days ago, I bought a BBA X1900 CROSSFIRE, to mount a CROSSFIRE next to a SAPPHIRE X1900XT. The problems that I have are I cannot to make work any game. They give me same fps activating or deactivating the CROSSFIRE.

The problem is that when activating CATALYST A.I. (default), option standard or advanced any game is executed, Windows leave errors to protection, but 3DMARK06 gives 8800 points. If I deactivate option CATALYST AI, I can execute the games without problems, but with the same speed that a single X1900. 3DMARK06 gives 5000 points

I have tried Catalyst 6.7/6.9 and 6.10 BETA and the same thing happens.

My PC is Opteron 165@2.8GHz and DFI CFX3200 (RD580 chipset) and a Seasonic 600W

Someone has some idea?

Regards and sorry for my english, I am from Spain :(

Try the new card by itself to make sure it works. Also, on some boards the master card has to be in a specific slot. Check your mobo manual to make sure. Lastly, is your PSU Corssfire/SLI certified?

The Master card without crossfire activated work perfectly and it is inserted on the first slot (according the manual).

The PSU isn't Crossfire certified, but I think that it should be sufficient. 38A on the 12v rail
and besides 3DMARK06 passes without any problems, if the CATALYST AI is activated, but the games crashes with this option

What resolution are you running the games in? It's not likely you will see much speed difference in low resolutions.

Try and enable 14xAA and 16xAF and check the performance. If Crossfire isn't working then the 14xAA options shouldn't be available.

I tried 1600x1200 in COD2 for example and its takes 35FPS average, always with CATALYST AI disabled, when I enabled this option, all games crashes

And, really, the 8xAA and 14xAA are available when I actived the Crossfire option

regards and thank you

I am just checking, but did you enable Crossfire in the Catalyst Control Center?

It may have 38A on the 12V rail, but some PSUs that have split 12V rails have been known to be too weak because of the way the rails are split. I'm not saying that is absolutely the case here, but it has been know to happen.

I have EXACTLY the same problem. The only difference is that I can run in my monitors Native res with CAT AI on, 1920 x 1200. Apart from that, its the same thing. Any game I try to load out of the monitors native res gives a GPF. Its driving me up the wall. Its definitetly not a card defect. I've tested both my cards. It is definitely related to Crossfire as if you disable Crossfire, CAT AI works properly.

Its annoying because I can run 3D Mark no problem with CAT AI on but nothing else. Uninstalling, Driver cleaner etc do nothing to solve this problem. I had been searching the web for someone with a similar problem and you are the 1st person I have found. It seemed to happen around the time I installed 6.8 but I'm not exactly sure.

At this point I am thinking about reinstalling. My next upgrade I will be buying a single card. Crossfire is a total ballache. When it works its great but I have had more problems with it than I can deal with. If its not one thing it's another.

If you figure out the problem please post the solution. I will of course do likewise.

Further to my last, one exception I have found to this situation is Company of Heroes. It will work with Catalyst AI on or off. Some strange anomalies are that it will pick its resolution (usually 1600 x 1200) no matter what resolution I set. It is very slow with CAT AI off, but you can turn shadows on. If you turn CAT AI on, it is much faster, but then if you leave the shadows enabled there is corruption. I've read on a few boards that CoH is totally incompatible with Crossfire and there are no plans to make it fully compatible. Just weird how it works with CAT AI on and every other game doesn't.

If the CF card is "just" a X1900, non XT, doesn't that mean that in Crossfire the slave XT card will be downclocked to non-XT speeds, thus giving you the power of two non-XT cards? Would this explain things?

I dont think so. The problem is (in my case and I think the other guys) that we cannot enable Catalyst AI without getting GPFs. In my case I can use CAT AI but ONLY if I play in 1920 x 1200, which isnt feasible, especially for games like the EA sports line. The menus are in 1024 x 768 and so it is impossible to get into the game without disabling CAT AI. I still think it is something to do with Crossfire as the problem is gone the second you turn Crossfire off.

Ah, getting Crossfire to work is almost as much fun as playing the games...almost!

Here's a few things you can try if you haven't already:

- Is your motherboard bios set correctly? Namely the PCIE link width. I'm sure the DFI CFX3200 supports 16x when you have both cards enabled, setting it at 8x may be killing your performance. You can use RivaTuner to check this or simply go into your bios.

- Update .NET to version 2 and patch it if you haven't already. We all know it's crap but it's required because CCC is required for Crossfire. Uninstall all ATI drivers by running ATI driver cleaning before you update/patch .NET. Then reinstall the 6.9 CATs (or your preference).

- When testing with games, have all your setttings at default 'application decide', disable adaptive anti-aliasing and HQ AF. Some of these settings can freak games out. For instance, I had to gradually enable each of these to get PREY running stable. Since I have also disabled GPU Recovery, the machine would hard crash and make the current save game unloadable. I can now run Prey at 1920x1200 with 14x AA, AAA enabled @ Quality, 8x AF + HQAF, Mipmap at max quality and CAT AI @ advanced and not drop a frame below 40.

- Run RivaTuner in the background when playing the games you can actually run. You have to do it twice, once for the slave then again for the master. Check the temps of both cards aren't getting too high and that they switch clock speeds (they don't down clock to the slowest card, it's a myth).

- Like above, run your motherboard monitoring software to check the northbridge temp. Before I changed the craptastic fan cooler on my DFI it would overheat very quickly with Crossfire (and a modest overclock) and either judder, crash the system or give me horizontal streaks across my screen.

- Check for updates on your motherboard bios and other stuff (DirectX etc) and possibly clean your registry.

- Format C:

Good luck!

Format C is the only thing there I haven't tried :(

I really can't figure it out and I have spent more than a few hours trying. Since I am probably going to upgrade to Kentsfield in the near future and will obviously have to reinstall at that point, I'll just wait until then. As much as I hate to do it I will be going Nvidia as well. ATIs hardware is A1 but the drivers (that I am sure are the culprit here) are trash.

CCC is the clunkiest, ugliest and most user unfriendly UI I have ever encountered. The R600 looks sweet but I will have to pass unless ATI drastically alter their drivers. When you are a Crossfire user you are s**ewed if you dont use CCC as you cant enable Crossfire or Catalyst AI. Would be great if Omega would put these options into his drivers.

I've had horrid luck with the Omega drivers over the years. Just lucky I guess.

I have had zero trouble getting Crossfire to work all the times I've used it. My own Crossfire configuration works very well. I don't like the CCC either, but it does work ok for me.

It worked for me up until 4 weeks ago. This problem came out of nowhere and nothing I do gets rid of it. Add to that the fact that ATI have not answered my ticket for over 3 weeks now and you have one frustrated customer.
