Crossfire - BF3 - 6990 + ??

With the new 12.6 and 7 drivers from AMD my 6990 has really virtually eliminated all microstutter and the game feels so smooth but only when I play in Low Quality @ 5760x1200 plus custom resolutions.

My question is now that AMD has worked out their playability issues with crossfire on both the 6900 and 7900 series chips I want to seek out an upgrade for the time being.

I have rule I like to live by "most of the time" where I dont upgrade GPU and CPU for atleast 2 generations or a Tick and skip the tocks.

Would it be wise for me to buy a second card, i.e. used 6970 or unlocked 50 to add a third GPU to my rig to get even better performance out of BF3? It is the only game I really play in eyefinity and have any real FPS issues with honestly.

Before these drivers I know the 7900 series was the way to go for smooth eyeF.

I would like opinions on what I should do? Should I just wait until AMDs next series of new GPUs hit the street, look at current offerings, or supplement my already fast GPU with a little helper?

I would like to NOT spend as much as possible and I am starting to see 6970s go for 200ish dollars.

So your saying now that if you go above your highest playable settings in BF3 you run into mere lack of graphics oomph rather than some kind of driver issue?

I so I'd be rather happy my hardware is working to it's fullest and just enjoy that for a time.

If you want more graphics power, the only proper move in my eyes is not tri-fire but one or two *new* GPUs. I'd stick with the 6990 enjoy that it's finally working perfectly for you and wait until the end of the year when the 8000 series AMD cards come out.

This right here. The 6990 is a hell of a card. IMO wait until the 8000 series comes out. If your that unhappy with it Ill trade ya my 5850 lol.

thanks. that sounds like true wisdom. I think I will just enjoy it like you say. And wait go for a tri/quad fire rig at the end of the year or beg of next with the new tech.

I ran with a 6990 + 6970 until about 2 weeks ago. I switched over to 2 7870 GHZ Flex edition cards and I'm getting around the same performance as I did with my tri-fire setup. I just draw a lot less power now.

I'm getting ready to unload my 6990 and 6970 here soon they will be up on the for sale forums probably by next weekend.

I've thought about selling my 6990 Liquid Cooled card here and getting one of those new 7970 GHZ Liquid Cooled MSI with 4 DP ports that was featured in the AMD section today or yesterday whenever it was.

Although I might wait and see what AMD does with 8000 series but I cant see how it will really matter too much over the 7900 series because wont the 8K series just be a tock (refresh)?
