I was wondering, will they support crossfire between both chips? Get a new R580 mastercard when it hits in feb and a R520 (x1800XT) as the second card? I know they are very similar, but still havent found anything stating the truth. Anyone know??

R580 and R520 both will have their own master cards. They have slightly different architecture. Besides, think of the naming convention, X1800 and X1900, X800 and X850 CrossFires were not able to be interchanged. Same applies to R520 and R580.

X1800XT Platinum Edition doesn't officially or unofficially exist. XT is the best of the R520 breed.

as far as i know, you could combine an x1800XL with a XT, you just wouldn't be able to combine any other combinations such as an X1800 with a X1600, i think theres more limitations to this, but i don't see why a XTPE wouldn't work with an XT which should pretty much be a beefed up XT

Your best bet is to wait the ATI thing out till they get their products and course straightened right now a sli type solution with crossfire doesn't look to be coming around anytime soon so either look at a 1 card solution or move to sli if you are upgrading.

From the looks of the way things are going:
1.) R520 will have CrossFire but for X1800 lineup only. (CrossFire master will downclock to match XL speed)
2.) R580 will have CrossFire but for X1900 lineup only.
(520 and 580 will not be able to run CrossFire with other gpu types)
3.) X1300 and X1600 will run CrossFire WITHOUT master cards and be able to send data through the PCI-E bus on any CrossFire ready motherboard for significant gains as was demonstrated by The Inquirer.
