Crossfire 580 vs single 1070

If you have to choose, IMO, FPS > adaptive sync. Vega may be a pipe dream, or it may not. Only time will tell.

So, you are comparing two things and publically declaring one the clear winner without actually trying both.

Having experienced both (at least freesync). I'd say freesync beats maxing out vsync.

Why?

It's smoother, and subjectively remains perfectly smooth feeling when frame rates occasionally deviate. (So long as you stay in sync hz range).

Case in point. I played through Shadow of Mordor in the last couple months at 7680x1440 on my Fury X Crossfire.
So long as my frame rate stated above 48FPS -- it felt perfectly smooth. My freesync monitor range is 48-75hz. When it dropped below 48hz, it felt not smooth. 47FPS --- felt like 47FPS --- as compared to smooth. Also freesync is ever so slightly visually smoother than max 75FPS on my monitor with vsync. There is an AMD Windmill demo where you can see this for yourself in a easy to verify manner.

Turn on vsync at 75hz it's pretty smooth, but not as smooth a freesync at 48-75hz.

The camera spins all around the windmill, the blades are turning fast, it changes the FPS on output so you can see how smooth it continues to be despite not running at a consistent framerate.

I've not tried gsync --- but my understanding is it operates the same way --- with an even larger range of Hz.

This adds smoothness (freesync is smoother than vsync capped) and helps eliminate inconsistent gameplay experience with frame spikes, eliminates tearing, and overall extends the useful life of the graphics cards since you don't have to cap out vsync constantly (and hope to dodge framespike issues. I can see where the tech would also extend the useful life of a video card - since smooth/consistent doesn't have to be ONLY vsync max and above.
 
Also, you don't get the added latency of VSync when you use Freesync. Also, mouse acceleration seems to be tied to VSync. After spending the last week or so playing with Freesync I am really impressed with it.
 
Archaea has made more to convince me to wait for Vega than all flamebate threads combined ever did. As long as Vega can offer a meaningful upgrade over CF Fury X, it will bring some competition to the market. The 580 already filled a gap that AMD had: a VGA for entry level VR.
 
He's converted me to his rebellion as well. Freesync is AMD's ace in the hole.
 
You know that sometimes platforms them self's is where SLi and Crossfire issues are really to blame as we never stay at one chipset long enough to fine tune them before moving to the next new thing.. then there is DX updates for windows or new API 's or the game engines so just saying that SLi or CX drivers are spotty is 100% not true..

I have ran CX 7950's on the X58 chipset and game play was like it should be and some games like (war thunder) have work around's to get it working.. I been running x58 for 7 years now and it still runs everything I want.
 
If you can't even offer a "halo" product that at least matches your competiton you don't deserve to have a place in the market. I'm tired of making excuses for these hype-beasting idiots. AMD/ATI has been nothing but a constant source of disappointment to anyone interested in the top end market for 7+ years now.

290X: Matched Nvidias best and shows some of the longevity the 7970 had even as a 390X.

FuryX: Matched to just underperformed Nvidias best

Today, yes AMD lacks a competitor to Nvidias best, but that hardly is 7+ years.
 
I am looking forward to vega, i really dont care how it performs as long as it rocks in VR and its priced based on its performance. If its priced near a 1070 ill take two at launch, if its priced near 1080 ill probably just buy more 480s/580s to put into my mining op
 
Yep me too. I always tell people not to mess with SLI/CF, but I want to get two Vegas. You only live once.

In the states this card will probably be so cheap it is always the other countries that have pricing issues, i dont fucking understand why.
Like Trump says, i am sure it is all rigged.
If i only knew of somebody in the states willing to buy and then ship the item for me. Im okay with USPS/FEDEX or DHL as long as it is tracked.
Ebay is outrageous those guys are high on something there prices are unrealistic.
 
The R9 290 or R9 3,, are those cards , or GTX 750 ti , or GTX 1050 , are those cards worth buying or is the RX470/RX480 still a good buy?
I'm really considering buying a second graphics card.
 
The irony is Quantum Break with DX12 was horrendously designed for Nvidia GPUs in terms of the game engine and global illumination/volumetric lighting/compute shader, so it does swing both ways.
And that is not the only game that is not structured to work great on Nvidia (they can work some magic with DX11 with their internal driver team to overcome some of the headaches but even then not guaranteed).
Tesselation is at least something that can be controlled at a more global level by AMD in their settings or directly by the Studio and developers, case in point is Witcher 3 where tesselation can be controlled within the ini file or by AMD GPU.
Nvidia does not dictate they must use 16x.

There are games from 10 years ago that look better than Quantum Break and have like 1/10th of the hardware requirements of QB. That game looks terrible and runs like 20fps at 4k with a 1080 Ti, lol. Just a terrible low effort port all around.
 
I thought Quantum Break actually looked quite good, but it ran like a dog (actually, that doesn't make sense, dogs can run pretty fast, lol).

Original poster sold his 1070 and bought a Fury X after borrowing my Fury X for about 3 weeks. He runs 2560x1080 on a 34" widescreen monitor with Freesync at 75Hz.

Why the change?
Freesync was the deciding factor.
 
Maybe an avenue for AMD and AIBs can take, have some combination gaming deals with choice of FreeSync monitors. FreeSync does make a huge difference and amazed how little coverage either GSync or FreeSync gets in reviews not only here but like everywhere.
 
I totally agree that Freesync and Gsync don't get brought up enough. I am sure it's just do to testers taking out one more variable. However, Freesync is WAY cheaper to get into. My monitor was $250. A single 580 $230ish is more than enough to fully take advantage of it. Playing games with freesync is fantastic.
 
if op decides to wait around i can recommende trying out fast sync on that card as a cheap mans freesync
 
Fast sync seems interesting. But how well does it work? It also sounds like it adds latency but not as bad as Vsync. SvenBent are you using it currently? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
 
RX Vega will discussed at Computex in about 11 days. I'd see what AMD has to say first, then make a decision. I might even upgrade to Vega if it's worth while, and I have a good experience with my Fury Nitro. Freesync is amazing, I understand wanting to switch and take advantage of it, but waiting a month or so for one new card that will be far more future proof than two lower end cards makes much more sense.

Agreed --- but you can't discount a crossfire setup freely IMO.
Crossfire has been perfectly problem free for me since December when I got my second Fury card. I've not had to disengage crossfire for any game whatsoever - not once.
For the most part, two Fury cards will be faster than a single Vega (if you aren't bumping up against your memory limit in anything) Adding a second Fury if you already have one, (and can get the second for a reasonable cost used) is still a quite reasonable path.

Crossfire appears to work quite a bit better than SLI as far as problem free --- and gives better performance gains too.
