Would adding a 3870 to a 5770 for crossfire increase or decrease performance?

Dont believe it can be done. Have to be of the same series at least for Xfire (HD5xxx, HD4xxx, etc)

The only thing I have heard about this is way back someone crossfired a 3870 and a 4850. The performance was less than impressive, I would call it bad actually.

Basically there is very little point.

even if you could it would be like crossfiring 2 3870's as the 5770 would just sit there and wait on the 3870

(if it were possible)

I don't think this is true as AMD crossfire does not scale down the fastest card to the slowest card.

For example, 4850+4870 > 4850CF

The only time this mattered is if one card had less VRAM than the other, in which case the total VRAM would be the lowest denominator.

Yeah but even if this were possible it would be a waste of your time.

I tried it ...before i got my second 5850 i tried x firing my 5850 with my 4850 ..didn't work ..i believe they have to be of the same generation

enjoy:

the 3800 series can also be paired with a 2900 series board, which has been removed from the chart (Simply to make room for the 5800 series boards)

no other combinations are available

using a Lucid Hydra based mainboard you could pair them together, however the performance would be less than the single 5770, as Guru3D demonstrated, pairing a 4870 and 5870 together:

kppanic:
it does not work that way, its symmetric multi-processing, just like SLI, Multi-Chrome, etc, it requires the processors to carry equal portions of the compute load, which is why you cannot add a 4350 to a 4870 and gain performance
