I currently have a Sapphire Radeon 4850X2. Playing BF3....not so happy. I can barely play on Medium settings. Looking at eBay, I could get a 4870 used for around $50.

Would it be able to run Crossfire with my 4850X2?
Would hoping for a 20% fps increase be a reasonable expectation?

You could probably get a used 4850 for cheaper than the 4870. Since using crossfire with non-identical cards lowers them all to the least common denominator it should be equivalent.

My advice is to sell the 4850x2 and buy a current-gen card.

this guy did some benchmarking of 4850 tri-fire but he doesn't show the x2 and x3 numbers for comparison

I ran a 4870x2 with a 4850 briefly just for testing purposes. it was a bit hit or miss but there was still a performance increase in some situations. in my case though the 4850 was a 512m part and was holding everything back in that regard. you probably wouldn't have that problem with a 4850x2.

in terms of crossfire utilization and compatibility, it should work great

Two 4870CF would be double the performance of the 4850X2?

The 4850X2 is worth about $100, if I bought a current gen I'm looking at a 6850 for $130. I figure I can get a used 4850 for about $50 shipped.
