Gonna be used for gaming/engineering programs... overclock after a year or so

by engineering programs you mean...

autocad?
inventor?

if so, id opt for 2gb of ram, especially if you're going to be using inventor heavily

the more ram the better is emphasized HEAVILY for that program

Honestly dont know, starting first year of EE this fall :) Thanks for comments guys

Edit: To thermite paste, it's a deal with the retail 64 2800+, combo deal yields $10 mobo
Edit edit: nm i didnt catch deal in time:[ guess i'll get the platinum MSI for $100 more :(

Thought it was the Chaintech and Abit K8T800 that had that deal. Don't ever remember any Asus board having it. I also think you should stick with one drive and do not do RAID if you don't have another drive to use as a backup, non-RAID'ed drive for file storage.

I think that's going to be a sweet computer, but keep in mind that those scaling articles are showing that CPUs below the 3000+ limit do not use either the X800XT or the GF6U to good effect and its better to save the money.

Of course, in the case of that X800XT PE, it looks like the Gateway deal, so its still cheaper than the price you'll find most Pro's for. ;) I'm looking to upgrade myself and I'm debating between going all out to compliment a super video (FX-53 and the MSI nf3 ultra socket 939 whenever it comes) or going medium for the time being (S754 3200-3400+, MSI or Epox nF3 250gb).

There's just something droolworthy about being top of the line, even if only for two or three months.
 
About the scalar, I dont see the benefit of that review at all. Why did they use an overclocked 3000+ instead of stock? Seems like the OC'd 3000+ is equiv to the 3500+ and the only other comparison offered is a non overclocked 2500+ barton. Kinda useless if you ask me..
