critique my OC build please

I would like to go far with an oc z170 gaming rig so I would like to get your opinions on this build as to wether out not i should "add" this or "change" this or "take away" that. I am not trying to go for the best of the best of everything I would just like my dollars to go far if you guys know what I mean. So here is my current with list:


z170 Asrock oc formula MoBo

trident Z 2 x 8gb 4000mhz ddr4

i5-6600k cpu

1070 gtx

3 x 256gb samsung 950 pro ssd (in raid 0)

cpu and gpu waterblock with 2 x 420mm rads, swiftech 35x pump, with 4 x 200mm fans in pull.
(loop order would be CPU -> GPU -> pump-> rad -> rad-> (cpu))


Current rig wont OC ram or CPU well at all so I want to actually buy quality parts and reuse what i already have where i can


MSI z170-a Pro
6600k i5
256 samsung 950 pro
970 gtx (gaming on 1080p would like to step up to 1440 or 4k)
360mm AIO cpu only can only OC to 4.6 at 1.415-1.425 v
adata 4x8gb ram kit 2400mhz (tried oc to 3000 @ 1.4v and 125 blck with no success and then gave up)
sound blaster x-fi fatality sound card (PCIe)


Please take a look and tell me what you think and what you guys would do. Thanks!

Don't do this. It's stupid. You have nothing to gain from this except complexity and an increased chance of data loss. Maybe your benchmark scores will be a bit higher, but in practical use you'll see no difference.

Since it appears you already have a single 950, I'd recommend reserving it for the OS and apps and getting a 500 GB class or larger SATA SSD for storage of game data and other stuff that would benefit from the speed boost over a HDD. Alternately, sell the unit and get a larger one (which, as it generally goes with SSDs of greater capacity, will probably be faster).

If that is important get an Asus board. Also, get an m2 ssd for the os and i suppose you can use the 3x256gb ssd for games or a big fat and fast spinner. SSD raid is really hard to screw up.

The Asrock board looks pretty good and its priced right. Your other component choices are good too. What are you gonna do with the ssd? Are you going to use the m2 tri raid 0?

Buy your CPU from somewhere where you can exchange the CPU for no reason in case it turns out to be dud for OC'ing

You should pack up the hardware and mail it all to me for further testing and a wavier signed that I do not need to return the items to you!

On a serious note, if you want to overclock, I don't see how you are lacking on hardware spec. I wouldn't run a raid, 1 SSD already floods your SATA ports. They need to find a way to open the floodgates of SSD!

yep, and currently its called "nVme/PCIE", which the op already has

OP, from what I've read over the past year or so, and my personal experience, you're not gonna get much more than 4.8ghz from the skylake chips (even the i7-6700K), regardless of what mobo/ram you pair it with, unless you use LN2 or something mo better than water cooling....

And that 4000mhz ram is a waste of money right now, as it is not gonna run that fast without bookoo hours of serious, heavy-dootie tweaking and cooling....which will most likely be non-productive at best....

And finally, I agree with everyone else here, that raiding the 950's is essentially pointless from a speed perspective....you're not gonna gain much this way either, unless you like living on the edge of losing all your data and other such mega-headaches and troubleshooting problems......
