So basically I am deciding on buying (upgrading) my current mp3 player. I was looking at something small, but with a hdd. I took the route as most people and was thinking of going with the famous IPOD, but after looking at the Zen Micro I am having second thoughts. Clearly it seems it offers many more features than that of the IPOD and is a bit cheaper in some aspects. Anyone have one of these bad boys or have experience with one? I would suggest any reviews or comments regarding it...thank you ;)

id probably get the iPod. it (the mini) has up to 18 hours of battery life, while the Zen is at 12. and it has 6gbs instead of 5gbs.

sure the Zen has more colors and features, but the iPod has more space and the innovative scroll wheel.

Features:
iPod: scroll wheel; 6gbs; 18 hr battery life; sexier (personal opinion)
Zen: more colors; FM radio; voice recorder; removable storage; fugly (another opinion. i finally saw the entire device, and not just the front. hated the looks)

i personally dont need either the voice recorder or radio, and probably not the removable storage either. since theyre the same price, i still say go w/ the iPod, even though the Zen has more features.

you use iTunes?
I use my x50 for MP3s, but its a pain to burn to a disc and re-rip with WMP to get it an un unprotected format (and Im sure there is a better way somewhere...just cant think of it on my own).

dunno i am receiving the Zen Xtra soon.. 12ish battery life and 60 GB..

I would say the iPod...used a friends and the click wheel is just plain cool...plus the new ones are 6 gig and have 18 hours battery life...

No way i hate ipod, i had 2 ipods, so i know. The Creative Zen Micro has WAY superior sound quality, its just more richer and deeper on the Micro... Almost as cool as the ipod mini in terms of design AND it has more features. This should be an easy one.

Thanks for all the replies so far, I am still leaning towards the Creative...

Anyone else care to put in their 2cents :)

it really depends on your life style, myself, i can drive i dont use an mp3 player ever, they have never appealed to me. i have an MD player that can hold 80 songs per disc at $2 a disc. no mp3 player can compare to my cars stereo, so im not really sure. you need to tell us where you are going to be using it and how you are going to use it. IE Gym, on the bus, etc

also no mp3 player can compare to the MD player for battery life, i have a nimh 2500mah AA battery in my md player and it has lasted over a month on ONE AA battery (regular use, 1-2 hours a day). what mp3 player can do that? also to recharge TWO AA nimh batteries it takes approx 45mins

Well basically I plan on using it for everday use (walking to classes, computer lab, walking, maybe the gym, etc.) I personally don't plan on using the voice recorder, but it might come in a bit handy at times. The hdd storage is also a nice feature, might even use.

I'd recommend the Micro - have have used and played with both and find the micro is a much better package!

Its best if you try out the devices at a retail store or through a friend... I prefer the iPod, but thats my preference after trying out both...

I borrowed my friends Micro and I am very happy with it. It shows up as a HD on my notebook, so it is easy to use as a portable HD too. I say this if you think you are going to buy music online (I think iTunes has more music than other comanies) or like the iTunes interface buy an iPod.

If you like the idea of having a removable battery, ok music syncing (through Media Player 10 ) a FM tuner, and possibly buying music online from other places buy the Micro.

I am trying to make the same choice as you right now and I am currently leaning towards the iPod mini 6gb with edu discount. This is partly because my GF has already started buying music from iTunes and I like how many 3rd party add-ons the iPod has (such as car chargers, speakers, and such) but if there wasn't iTunes and the price didn't just drop for the mini I think I would have bought the micro.

^^^ the iPod can show up as an external HDD also. not just the Micro.

iTunes does have the most expansive and easiest music selection.

a removable battery can be convenient, but id personally like to have it noninterchangeable, just because theres one less breakable part i have to worry about.
besides, by the time the battery needs changed, its time to get a new iPod  and the cost of replacement is almost as much as a new battery. 100$ for them to have it replaced, or i think you can buy replacements for 50$ and do it yourself. A new battery will run you the same amount no matter which MP3 player you get (aside from AA and AAA MP3 players).

aside from the lack of accessories w/ the Mini, its an excellent buy. But then again, the cases and whatnot are crap, and if you have a cable, thats all you need, anyways. You can charge and sync w/ one cable at the same time. Just spend another 20$ to get a good case, which is probably the same price for any other MP3 player. and the addition of many third party accessories is very nice. :D
