I recently had to reinstall Vista on my desktop system and now after installing the drivers for my Creative X-Fi sound card, its making a lot of static noise. I've found several others with similar problems but no solutions. Most say it has to do with its issues with Vista 64 having more than 3GB or RAM.
I've been running 4GB for some time now and now is the first time ive seen any problems with it so I'm having a hard time believing its the memory.

I'm currently tweaking some BIOS settings to see if the recent changes are the culprits. If anyone has had this problem or knows anything about it, I would be most greatful.

Have you tried muting the inputs you don't use? It could just be line noise, so try disabling line in, mic, etc.

thanks matt, ill have to try that.
i did go through, reset all the BIOS to defaults and rebooted, problem is gone. So after testing several settings, and now the only one i havent done yet... that is enable Memory Remapping and the sound is running flawlessly.
So the next step is enable mem remapping and see what happens. if it doesnt work, ill check the inputs for interference, but after looking at those, pretty sure thats not it...
the static happens even when the windows makes its sound during boot up.
tells me its either a BIOS or OS issue.
ill post an update after i try those steps

yeah, its not any input interference or distortion, it is a conflict with Vista 64 running more than 4GB or ram. After getting everything back up, the sound is great. Finished OCing the memory and cpu, still running great. Enabled Mem Remapping, static returns.
So far, i have come across several forums and posts regarding this issue. Creative's driver support has been lacking for some time (some say they are getting better) but this issue has been brought to the attention of Creative and in my opinion, their responce implimented that this problem wasnt big enough to cause them enough problems to spend their time and resorces to fix. Thats not a quote, but thats the jist of their reply.
Ill see if i can find the actual email and post it.
I've read how a "Daniel_k" had taken a set of creative drivers, tweaked them so they actualy work, i believe he posted them on the creative forum and was threatened by lawsuit for doing so. Even though it fixed the problem where Creative fell short of anything that resembles Customer Care or Service.

Daniel K was threatened after he asked for donations for himself on Creative forums for tweaking drivers in a way that was deemed illegal by Creative. They said drivers had certain licenced Dolby element was which was paid/licenced for particular products only and asked Daniel_K not to breach this agreement. The guy was still asking for money on their own forums, so they banned him. Anyway I tried his modded drivers, out of silly curiosity, and run into bad problems including the fact they were bundled with some spyware so I do not recommend going down this route at all.

What X-Fi sound card do you have exactly?

I didnt know all of that about the Daniel_K situation so thank for the headsup, Jim.
Im running the SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio 5.1 behond that, im not sure the specs of it.

This isn't a vista problem itself; Vista's audio sub system is fine...this is shitty creative drivers (Ha! Who would've guessed that....)

Try the latest creative drives (latest betas) - as they are working fine for me. But I fear that right now my X-Fi hardware may be dying (and let me tell you, if it does - it is WELL out of warranty...and I will NOT be buying another card from Creative. They're just a bunch of scum bags who take your money and give you no support. Creative is about the only company I have nothing but hatred for.)
