i'm using the creative x-fi fatality sound card, sans front panel. the card has different presets for gaming, entertainment, and sound creation. usually i keep it on entertainment since it seems to result in clearer and better sound for music, movies, and other multimedia applications. when i want to play a game like dota or tf2 i play with my friends on vent. but for some reason, the sound card will only allow for mic input when the sound card is on the gaming setting. to others who have this card, is this considered to be the norm ?

also, the sound itself doesn't seem to be too incredible. i mean, i have brand new hd595 headphones and they sound better on my ipod than they do on my pc (minus the bass, which is much more intense on the pc). should i get a new sound card? or is there a way to further optimize the sound card for all-round accessibility and performance (gaming, multimedia, sound input, etc) that i'm unaware of?

and one last question..

the sound card has all these special settings for headphones, but when i keep it on the headphones setting, the sound quality is less than stellar...it sounds far better at a 2.1 setting....why is this the case?

help!

Have you ever used a good pair of headphones for gaming before?

What is going on is when you use the 2.1 settings the sound appears to be better because of how oh man, too early to explain, anyway though I find it much better under headphones, just use it as you wish.

As for the mic, try open the volume control panel of windows and make sure that the mic and mic 2, are not muted. They should appear there.

Right now the Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card is in the state of chaos. First Creative took away the support for DTS, then Microsoft use different implementation for DirectX Audio in Vista so 5.1 surrond doesn't work in Vista unless you use Alchemy. So it is really Fxxk up right now. If you want to upgrade your sound card, wait until they come out with PCI-Ex1 card. Hopefully all the bugs will be sorted out by then.

P.S. I still think my old Audigy 2 ZS sounds better than X-Fi Fatal1ty pro, at least the explosion sounds. The gun fires in X-Fi sound like toy guns or fire crackers. Just that X-Fi sounds clearer than Audigy 2 ZS.

all of the settings in my control panel are seemingly optimized for mic input, i know my sound card quite well, along with all of the settings that have come with it and i can say with a fairly large degree of certainty that the input issues i'm having are not a result of settings that have not been optimized.

one of the main reasons i'm considering selling this card is to get another with dts. i want to get some nice speakers one of these days, and i'll need dts capability for that.

IF you want DTS, don't look for it in Creative. They removed that feature in their software. You have to use third party, such as PowerDVD, for that feature.

Platinum card probably has DTS feature intact, as long as you don't install the microsoft X-Fi driver in the Windows auto-update.
