creative surround mixer problems

I dont know why but i keep having this problem where when i change from headphones to speakers and i go to adjust my speaker settings in my creative surround mixer it is locked in on headset and i cant get the 5.1 channel settings. so ultimately i can only play out of two speakers which sucks. I have done everything in the past from a simple restart to audio setting in the actual pc and not the mixer and it does no good i have to reinstall the drivers everytime can someone please tell me why i keep running into this problem i know its a cheap peace of hardware but the actual hardware is good its the software and so i thought maybe its just the cd drivers and i went online and im stil having the same application bug. can someone please give me some advise on how to fix it ive searched google hard and long and no solutions have been presented to me. I keep telling myself that maybe its a software conflict or regisrty error that can be adjusted in the settings somewhere but i have yet to find it.

the actual piece of hardware is a creative soundblaster 5.1 if that helps
 
Sorry I cant be very helpful, but I'd try reloading the OS just to see.

But: I didn't know the 5.1 let you do that at all anyway. (works fine on the X-Fi)
