My buddy just got the SB X-Fi fatality sound card but im having a bit of trouble setting it up. The sound will only come out of the right side. ie right headphone, right speakers. im not sure how to fix it. any suggestions?

Have you tried using another set of headphones to rule out bad ones, also check the software that comes with the card a lot of times the software requires additional tweaking.

thx for the help. i couldnt find another set of headphones so i uninstalled the software and reinstalled the drivers. after doing that, everything works well, except the volume knob on the front pannel doesnt adjust the volume. i would have expected the drivers to fix that issue as well. is there something i hav eto adjust to make that work?

More than likely I would check to see if you plugged all the cables in for the front panel to the board, if that's not working it's a software problem.

There are two ways around this.
1) uninstall everything and install the original stuff on the X-Fi CD and then update the drivers as needed.

2) grab the X-fi support pack (dated june 2009?) for the xfi series via a link on the creative forums; with this link, you won't have to even touch the original CD. It's for windows vista/windows 7 but I don't know if there is an XP version out.

3) Volume knob will NOT work if dolby digital live is enabled.
