Creative Audio converter!

I have a general question. I have received a few mixed answers already so I was hoping some of you guys could help me. I have an audigy2 Zs sound card and with it come the program audio converter which allows you to pick/change the destination format of a MP3 or wav and also change the bit rate sampling to higher or lower quality up to 320 Kps. I have 15GB's worth of MP3's on my hard drive but the majority of them are 128 Kps and a few are even as low as 96. I would like to convert them all to 256 Kps using the converter. I have used it a few times already and I swear I can hear a noticeable sound difference. Problem is a few people on another forum informed me that there is no way to change the sampling rate or a MP3 after it is created no matter the program.

So does the converter really change the quality of sampling or is this just a gimmick? :confused:
 
mp3 is a lossy compression, basically when the file has been compressed the data has changed and loss has already happen. there is no real way to bring the original quality back. however I think the Creative Audio converter attempts to do this, but again it's most likely not going to be as good and IMO in some cases might even be worse.

Loswy or not. This is the stadard. MP3 is the standard. Just like the NVIDIA GeForce and the ATi Radeon. Both standards of the industry...

It will be hit and miss. Converting 128kbps to 256kbps will not recapture original information seeing that it is already gone, but it will fill in the gaps with the best approximation based on the surrounding information. Sometimes this will result in a better sound and sometimes it won't. One thing to remember is that sound is very personal and what may sound good to you, may sound bad to someone else.
