Creative alternatives - worth looking at?

Hi all,

I am purchasing the parts for a new machine as we speak, and may want to add a sound card to the list. It seems the standard nowadays is the X-Fi, but are there any alternatives? Are the sound cards from other manufacturers even worth looking into? If so, what are some high quality cards made from companies other than Creative? Thanks in advance.

All depends on what your going to do, and how important the latest versions of EAX is to you? If your primarily a gamer and love the latest EAX effects, stay with Creative. If your doing music, or movies (ie HTPC) I would go with the Auzentech Xplosion (does DTS Live).

AARGH!

Assuming you're not interested in EAX (which if you are, Creative is really the only way to go):

I'm using the m-audio 7.1 which has impressed me so far.
The Chaintech av-710 I hear is also excellent, and very inexpensive.

The sound quality on those two is quite good. You won't have great support for EAX, but for myself it is a non-issue.

Thanks for the replies.

Gaming will be something I will be doing on this new machine. However, my current audio setup seems fine for my gaming audio experience. My nforce2 motherboard with its' integrated soundstorm audio, although a good integrated audio solution, is still an integrated solution. I'm not sure what level of EAX it supports, but gaming with this integrated audio has never been a problem for me.

That being said, movies and music are definitely a big part of what I'll be doing on this new machine.

your soundstorm only supports up to eax 2.

games like Prey, Battlefield 2, World of Warcraft, Doom 3, Quake 4, Fear, Psychonauts and others use EAX versions 3-5.
