Creating a TXT file?

This has got to be a simple question, but how do I create a TXT file?


I've tried text edit, but I can only save as an RTF or DOC.
When I rename it, I just get garbage at the top and "/" for new lines.
I looked at macupdate.com, and there aren't any programs that do it.

To make a plain text doc inside TextEdit press Shift+apple+t
I think.... Not on a mac atm
