Creating a data archive--copy files to, then read-only?

I want to create an archive for photos and videos on my file server, and wonder how I can do this. I am not certain I can do this readily with file system permissions, but it seems I can get close.

Currently my server is Windows Server 2008, but I would be open to a different OS. I've considered FreeBSD, so I would be interested to see if maybe a different OS has this feature.

Basically, I want the user to be able to create a folder in the archive (another folder/directory) and copy files to that new folder (say directly from a SD card after vacation or something). After the files are copied, I want them to basically go into a read-only state so they cannot be modified.

It looks like in Windows Server there are two advanced file permissions that get kind of close, but don't quite do what I want (unless I interpret them incorrectly):

  • Create files / write data: Create files option allows the creation or placement (via move or copy) of files in a folder. Write data allows data in a file to be overwritten (does not permit appending of data).
  • Create folders / append data: Create folders option allows creation of sub-folders in current folder. Append data allows data to be appended to an existing file (file may not be overwritten)

In FreeBSD, it looks like my options are just standard r/w/x. I thought maybe a simple script/cron job or something could be setup daily or so relatively easily, but if there's something built into the file system that I don't know about, it would be much preferred.

Any ideas?
