Has anyone ever purchased a heatsink from crazypc.com and had them lap it? for 19 bucks it seems worth it to me as I would have to buy the sandpaper and then not screw up my 70 dollar TRUE.

In reviews I've read of the Ultra-120 Extreme RT 1366 they've said the base is flat but everyone always seems to say lap a true lap lap lap
 
its a pain in the arse to lap a big heatsink. for 19 bucks, i say go for it. but IMO, a $70+ dollar heatsink shouldnt need lapping :rolleyes:

And yet it still out performs everything on the market and can be had for 49 bucks, not 70. I think a $300 CPU shouldn't need lapping either. :rolleyes:

I can't speak to how well their work is, but the biggest improvement will come from having both being lapped. I think it's kind of a waste of money if in the end the CPU isn't lapped also.
 
The Ultra 120 has curved surface from the factory - lapping gives it better contact.

well i lapped my amd x2 for the server(see sig below) and got a 5C lower temp :eek:(cpu seemed pretty flat before lap, i checked it with a razor blade) i don't want to lap the HSF but im sure if i did i will prob see another 5C in lower temps, but i heard from lapping cpu + hsf, you can get up to 10C+ cooler :eek:
 
mine needed major lapping, and it took me over an hour. major pain with that huge radiator. $20 is saved time and saved fingers if you can afford it. i had a pile of sandpaper already so did it myself. cpu was flat enough for me, and i didn't want to mess with it. TRUE was visibly curved. but do it yourself makes you appreciate it a bit more i guess.

Might want to go ahead and do it, I dropped another 8C after lapping my CPU (TRUE was already lapped).
 
good call! i dropped ~15C by lapping the cpu tonight. i discovered that like almost half the cpu cover wasn't touching the true! :eek: cpu was really uneven. clean both, press together, and hold 'em up in front of a light bulb to check for gaps. mine's still not perfect, but it's worlds better now.
