Okay so I've come across a reproducible problem
Heres a quick rundown:
Transferring a large array of files (300,000+ files, ranging from small things like gmod LUA files for my server to backups of 40GB BluRay rips of my movies)... transfer size is approximately 400GB moving over a Gigabit network.
Oh the host PC which its coming FROM (outbound) to my data server (saving to), its coming off my desktop's secondary storage drive... Theoretically, since its on a secondary drive in my PC, I would think I should not see a performance hit other than the network being maxed out...
Well heres what goes wrong: 1st thing is my audio craps out... 5 minutes into the transfer session sound just stops. The drivers are there, but when a sound should be emitted, it just isn't. I click the volume icon and where it would normally show sound output (noted by a green bar that moves up and down indicating volume of output sound) it just sits motionless as if I did nothing.
I launch a game like Left4Dead2... the Menu lags so hard I can't even click anything. I have to CTRL+ALT+DELETE my way out of the game because its so unresponsive..
File transfer finishes.. maybe it was just lag?
Game still lags, sound still wont work. I try to play a movie... both MPC and WMP crash after 3 seconds of video play - not making a sound. The video starts to play and the window stops responding and force closes.
The only time I get this problem is during and after a massive file transfer that exceeds 200GB and takes longer than 2 minutes.
Can anyone even think of where to start looking? My drivers are all good, recent, Windows 7 Enterprise is all updated and whatnot, I maintain my PC very well (in addition, this install is less than 1 month old).
I have absolutely no idea where to start looking as I am seeing a sound AND video problem...
