Crazy KVM questions

My buddy just called me and asked for a crazy request. He is a record producer and what he wants to do is be able to have 2 computers in his machine room and be able to use both computers in his 2 rooms. So the scenario would be person x owns computer x and is working room A and person y owns computer y and is working in room B. Now they need to switch rooms so person y needs computer y to be connected to the monitor, keyboard and mouse in room A and person x needs computer x do have to same setup in room B.

They found a DVI with USB patch panel that they think would work but they really want something like a KVM. I have just never heard of a KVM that can switch multiple computers with multiple peripherals.

This is probably a shot in the dark but has anyone see a device that can do this or had a configuration like this. Thanks
 
Laptops plus docking stations seems the obvious solution.

To simple for us.

Ok here is what you do. . . . . .

Put computer X in room X
Put computer Y in room Y

In rooms A and B, purchase raspberry pi micro computers and connect them to keyboard.mouse.monitor.

Next load a flavor of Linux on the pi's and create RDP icons to connect to machines X and Y.

In room where X an Y are, have an IP KVM to switch between the two.

There, I think that meets your requirements, throw in some massaging chairs while your at it. oh and make the pi's powered by and elliptical to encourage weight loss and fitness.
 
A KVM with user stations should do the trick, but may be overkill for this situation. I would look on e-bay for something like a Raritan Paragon II UMT series KVM- the UMT442M is probably cheapest, and a P2-EUST for each user. CIMs would be needed for each computer as well. If you aren't in a hurry, you could probably get the equipment needed for $300-$500. If you are in a hurry, expect to pay over $1000.

Specifically what does your buddy need to do with these computers? Are they hooked into specialized equipment? Hooked into the Audio/mastering process? RDP and/or KVM might not cut it. We need more information.
 
Laptops and docking stations aren't the answer. He does uses a laptop with expansion chassis for tracking at other studios but laptops aren't powerful enough to handle a full mix on hence why they use G5's. The setup has to work with the existing G5's.
 
G5, as in the G5 Mac? Isn't that older? I would think a current quad-core laptop could keep up with an older "Powah" Mac.

If not, you could always build a central multi-Xeon server with virtual machines, and have two thin clients in the room to work as your desktop interface. Any specialty cards you'd just have to run directly in the server and run your cables (have it centrally located).
 
G5's are still "modern" one of the machines is a dual quad and the other is a dual 6 core so unfortunately a laptop can't touch that. We actually have tried to build a custom xeon machine before but Pro Tools is the biggest pain in the ass to run on Windows and even a hackintosh we had troubles with because Pro Tools is so hardware specific.
