I am going on a field trip to minneapolis in march and we were talking about some of the places they have gone in the past. Apparently they got to go to the crey/cray(not sure of the spelling) company
supposedly it didn't seem like it might get all that interesting at first but it eventually did get cool.

What caught my ear was that apparently there is some type of liquid that is non conductive and they have a sealed computer with this stuff in it and all the cards/motherboards were completely immersed, and a "waterfall" coming out of the front of the unit.

in addition this sounds really crazy but apparently you can drop a mouse in a bucket of this stuff and it cant drown because you can breathe in it.

I will get the name of the stuff again tomorrow (it slipped my mind)

crazy huh
sounds like a movie I have heard of before

It's probably flourinert. Crazy shit and expensive as hell. I wish I got to tour a cray plant. That would be awesome.

Perhaps thinking of the James Cameron movie "The Abyss", where Ed Harris breathes the "classified" liquid and dives to the bottom of the trench.

BTW, it is fluorinert. 3M makes it.

Ah yes, flourinert, used for immersion cooling. It's $500 a gallon I believe.

Neat, be sure to tell us if you see anything really interesting over there at Cray HQ.

Cray has been using fluid immersion cooling since their second supercomputer, I think.

I saw a demo on TLC where they just dropped a mouse in a beaker of the stuff and it was trying to hold is breath and just gave up...and 5 minutes later it was just walking around on the bottom of the beaker. Intense.

[dr.evil]One million dollars![/dr.evil]

Actually they are pretty pricy.
Check out the movie sneakers, there is a bunch in there.

I used to work with a girl who's brother was head network admin at Cray/SGI. She used to get some awesome goodies from him.
Posters, t-shirts, that sorta thing.

I want to see that, you know the name of the show?

hehe.. that's the movie i was thinking of when i saw him say that.

anyways, you can dip your computer in deionized water or something like (pure water, h2o, nothing more) that if it's completely clean and in theory, it'll work fine.

the contaminates in water provide a path for current and short out electrical components.... afaik water doesn't conduct.

Correct, 100% pure water doesn't conduct. One suggestion as an alternative to fluorinert would be mineral water, though you'd need 100% mineral water, and if it has any fragrances or contaminants...ZAP!

In theory, distilled water will work. But, in practice, you're not going to be able to get rid of any dust/residue that exists on your board or whatever you're going to keep the computer in. Of course, if you have money to burn, feel free to try it :)

wow....

Is that flouroinert stuff toxic at all?

if not, the cold day in hell I win the lottery, I'm filling a small tub full of that stuff and chill out in the bottom of it for the whole day.

My gf works for 3M....I'm gonna try to get a discount :) This stuff sounds fun!!! I'll post back as soon as I find out!

That mouse looks pretty dead ot me :p

Thats so insane! Have they tested this on humans yet?

i want a swimming pool full of it!! :D

thats sweet.. a fish living with a mouse! haha.. and the dogs will mate with cats!!

that mouse is prolly like "whooaaaa sheeeet man, this izz some goood sheeet!" lol he looks stoned out of his friggin mind.

Cray and their flourinit cooling are both very cool. And yes you can breath in it, most of the time. When flourinit gets "burned" from getting too hot it actually gives off mustard gas, which we all know is extremely lethal. You can sometimes buy it used from universitys and companys that have Crays when they change out the fluid, but usually in large 55 gallon drums so it's too pricey in that quantity. I'm eagerly awaiting Crays AMD Opteron based supercomputer they're going to be building, the most powerfull supercomputer that will exist based on good ole AMD processor technology

sweet stuff!

warning though, to the poster who suggested the de-ionized water etc.. umm.. in theory that's a good idea, until it comes into contact with your parts!!! It'll grab ions from the crap (dust, etc..) all over your board and parts which will cause you some problems! ;)

See photos of them de-installing the C90 here: http://www.scd.ucar.edu/news/00/features/0414.antero/index.html

REALLY interesting stuff, this Fluorinert!

Opened up by "popular request".....but, please, how about keeping things on topic....OK?

I was there when they pulled that beast out :)

That was one huge computer... If I only had thought to grab one of the barrels of Fluorinert :p

Could have immersed the dog!

woo-blurpf-of.... bubble bubble.

lmao.. imagine bobbing for apples!!

any one know any specs of the crey computers etc.
what kinda video audio(if any) ect.

checked out that like with the guys submersing a MB and system and they used fluoinert and LN2 and were able to stable overclock a 566 mhz to over 1.05ghz
pretty interesting I would have to say

I really doubt the crays have an audio output. It's for supercomputing, not playing mp3s. I also wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any video output, other than status displays and such.

That's friggin crazy, I wonder if there are any supercomputers like that on the East Coast.

If you say the Apple supercomputer at Virginia Tech, I'll hit you.

I believe that MIT had access to a cray, but I may be wrong...

Oh, and it had NO audio/video out. You passed it a mathematical model, and it did the calculations for you, and your system did the rendering.

apple super computer.... rofl... just lost all respect for virginia tech :p

Actually they wanted to try filling premature babies' lungs with it because the stuff is easier on the tissue than respirators.
