Crashplan remote backups - OpenIndiana issues

I'm having one particular issue with CrashPlan on OpenIndiana. I am trying to backup my work files to my home OI All-in-one server and everything works except for the remote connection from my work machine to my OI box.

It may be a router/firewall issue, but I'm starting to doubt that. Here's why:

My home workstation is seen by my office workstation and can backup to my home
My home WHS server is seen by my office workstation and can backup to my home
My OI box is seen but can't connect from my office workstation
I can backup my home workstation to my OI box just fine

This should rule out permissions. I would think if I had a router issue I would not be able to backup to my Windows 7 or WHS boxes but they work. OI is the only problem and only outside of the network.

The firewall on OI is turned off. The Crashplan desktop client on my office workstation sees the correct internal IP, external IP, and port.

All 3 boxes use port 4242, but again the Windows boxes can both act as a backup target.

Thoughts?

Your win 7 and WHS is on the same network as openindiana?

can you map a drive from your office workstation and create a file on OI where backup is stored?

Yes, same network and I can create a file on the OI box. Again, internal CrashPlan clients using my account all work inside the network just fine.
 
Oh, sorry, when you said 'office workstation', I thought maybe it was remote. Can the work pc see anything on OI? e.g. ping, ssh, whatever?
 
My home workstation (same network/location) sees everything and has no access issues

My office workstation (remote machine) can't access Crashplan on OI but can access Crashplan on both my home workstation and my home WHS box.

OI, home workstation, and home WHS are all on the same network.

I just setup my router to forward SSH traffic to my OI box and it worked like a champ. Got right through without any issues.

Maybe I should change the port in Crashplan? This just seems rather odd.
 
Changed the port on my OI box and restarted the Crashplan services on both OI and my remote office machine. Still no traffic to Crashplan. My remote machine is just stuck at "Waiting for connection".
 
Now I'm confused. So the work PC *is* remote? So it is coming in thru your router? Are you saying you hacked around the issue by tunneling via ssh to the OI box and it works? Be curious to see a packet trace on the OI when you try connecting in the non-working case...
 
Yes, the work PC is remote at the office backing up to my home OI server.

Work PC -> Office Router -> Interwebs -> Home Router -> OI

What has me scratching my head is that forwarding port 22 is fine. The CrashPlan GUI network config shows that it's fine as well. I guess a final test would be to manually forward port 4243 to OI to make sure there's nothing going on with uPNP in the router.
 
Manually forwarded the port on my router and verified the port is open. The office machine still sits on "waiting for connection" and machines inside the network are fine. I guess I'll give CrashPlan a call and see if they have any ideas. This has to be something OI/Solaris specific because all of the Windows boxes just work without any config changes. Google isn't coming up with much on this problem.
 
FIXED

Steps to correct:

1. Assign a different port for CrashPlan (in my case 4243)
2. Setup port forwarding in your router for port 4243
3. Important: restart the CrashPlan service on OI

Even though I was able to telnet to the open port after step 2, OI would not accept the incoming connections until the service was restarted.

Odd, but it's now working. My office machine is streaming a backup to OI and it's plugging away.
