So, I recently got an external enclosure for my old 2.5 hd and recently went to boot it only to find that I crashed every time I tried. Do you think this is because it has the same vista as my new hard drive? In which case I guess that's fine, I just want to rule out my own error or something wrong in bios.

I can browse the hd's documents while booted into my other harddrive so in this case it isn't a problem if I can't boot from it because of vista activation.

thanks.

First, I wouldn't try booting any normal Windows install from a USB drive because if it even worked, the performance would be horrid. Second, it is probably carshing because it isn't booting off the same controller as before (I'm guessing this was cloned).

If you absolutely, for some unique reason, must boot from an external drive, switch to an eSATA drive from the same controller as your primary internal drive.
