Alright, so I noticed this about 3 weeks ago.
Whenever Im finished downloading something, or loading a game, or doing anything that takes a lot of CPU power for more than 4 or 5 seconds, my computer will completly freeze and. My keboard, and everything locks up. I end up pressing the reset button my computer so I can get back to whatever I was doing.

I have found this happening whenever I try to load Half-Life 2. I never had a problem before so im not sure what could be causing this.

My specs are in my signature. And nothing has been overclocked.

Any help is appreciated
Thanks

how hots the CPU?
what cooler are you using?
how many amps on the 12v rail fo the PSU?
need more info :)

Right now the CPU temp is at 64c/147f (That seems kinda hot...maybe?)
OEM AMD Cooler (That could be the problem)

Im not quite sure where to find the amps on my 12v rail..although in Asus Probe it says 12.288 next to it. Is that it?

You'll have to excuse my inexpierence. This was the first computer I built. But it's been great to me for about a year :)

That's pretty darn hot for an XP- if you said it's never happened before, blow the dust out of your heatsinks, fans, PSU, grills, and just about everything else you can get to. That number is in fact your 12V line, and it's fine. Most likely the dust build-up is blocking your airflow.

Okay thanks. I cant believe I didnt think of this...

Maybe its time for a better heatsink. Anyone have any suggestions for a Socket A (Athlon XP 2800) heatsink?

yes, the thermaltake silent boost works well or just get an arctic cooling silencer. Both will do nicely. I don't think your looking for an overclockers hs so you don't need to break the bank.

Swiftech MCX462-V, I got mine for about $30 way back when. Pair it with a 92mm fan (I recommend the Zalman or Stealth- I think Nexus makes this one) for about $10 more, tops.

sweet. I was looking at the Zalman ones too, those are kinda pricy though.

I opened up my case, vaccumed a bit and left the side off. My CPU temps have been about 43c now. Hopefully that'll work till I can get a better heatsink since im running low on cash.

run with the case side off until you get a new cpu cooler - you dont want to fry it while hunting a new heatsink...
I suggest getting a thermalright -
search the forums for older models or go with the xp-90 (seems to be dropping in price, especially since the new xp-90 c - "c" for copper) STAND CORRECTED xp -90 NOT compatible...
the alx-800, slk-800, slk-900, etc., should do fine with a decent 80-92mm fan on -
a thermaltake smart fan 2 is what I use and I never have heat issues. And I overclock...
but then I have a grey core desktop 0330 dated cpu... She'll run full speed at 1.45 volt - no additional voltage to run 11x200...

XP90 isn't socket-A compatible. SI97 is the equivalent, IIRC, but that won't be able to carry over when you go 64-bit. It's still an awesome cooler though. For a universal fit, you were right to look at the Zalman CNPS-7000 series- it's not quite as efficient as the XP90, but it's quieter.
