:(

Over the course of a month, something went wrong with each of my 4 or 5 borgs, and my home machine simply can't take the processor hit anymore... I'm lagging like crazy with just a few apps open.... all spyware has been cleaned (I'm a power user)

I lost my job... -1 borg
F@H made a friends laptop overheat constantly... -1 borg
His parents moved and took their 2 machines with them... -2 borgs
He sold his personal machine... -1 borg
My personal machine is eatin the dust slowly... -1 proc

So here I am..... 0 PPD.

that sucks man. Especially losing your job. :(
glad i am in college and dont have to worry about jobs for at least a year. Just internships.

Is the cup half full or half empty?? I think it is half full and you have an opportunity to find another job where you can borg 25 machines. All AMD goodness, 3700+ 64bit chips. And those are only the secretaries and assistants boxen!!

I hope that vision helps! :D

Ciao for now ......

Sorry to hear about things xENo. But Gwilya is right, now's the time for that b0rgtastic job, where you can fold on everything in sight. On the serious side though, we're all here for you and wish you luck!

Sorry to hear about all the problems, but what's wrong with your personal machine?
Speaking of eating the dust
1 - have you cleaned the CPU fan lately?
I've had several machines where the fan got clogged and that was the problem.
2 - have you cleaned the registry and apps that start by themselves lately?
Sometimes a good format of the disk and rebuild will do wonders.

Sounds like it is time to spend what money you have left on more b0x3n..
once that runs out beg your parents for more.. then once that runs out..
find another job...

but best of luck with all that stuff.. when i get back i have to do some
serious work on my amd its c/b alot lately... and i didnt leave anything
else on at my apt. err. and friend had to take a few comps down.
so im down alot of ppd.. but still getting some..

at least i am home in alaska.... best of luck to you xENO

Sorry to hear it man. Hopefully you entered Steve's give away and you win a boxen.

loosing a job does suck...happened here once and didn't like the experience...as for the glass being half empty or half full...I prefer to think that it was over engineered for the amount of liquid that is in it

Man, that sucks. A sorta similar thing happened to me - I had 25 borgs go out because FAH kept killing their main function (to use openoffice). My production used to be 2000+ ppd, and now I'm down to 300ish.

Hope you get back on track, man.

What was the problem with openoffice? I run it and F@H on the borg's(and my main producer) when they are on and it works fine for me.

Not enough memory. FAH gives up cpu time readily, but the machines only had 256 or 128, so when FAH swapped in, it would take enough memory to push the system to the point where it starts killing the biggest processes in a desperate attempt to not crash. Thus, the biggest process was OO, and it would get killed. Then FAH would continue, happy as a clam.

Occasionally, FAH would get killed instead of OO, but then when the machines restarted, it'd come back on and there goes stability.

Stupid users, how dare they type their reports and do productive things.

Oh all of mine run 384or 512mb so I guess that is why they haven't noticed. The thing that gets me though is the memory leaks in firefox. That will shit up a system fast.

Thanks for the comments guys.... I didn't post this to talk about my job though, I got hired at a new place literally on my last day of my old job.

I now work at Disney. I'm a programmer on the following websites:

disney.com
disneyworld.com
espn.com
abcnews.com
go.com
movies.com
disneycruiselines.com
disneyvacationclub.com

There's a handful of other big sites too... but yeah... I dont think I'll be convincing disney to borg anytime soon. :p

I would reformat but truth be told.... I just have so much data on my drives that I can't wipe them. I could back them up, but I have about 80 gigs that would need to be backed up, and a CD burner that only goes 16x... lol

I own my own web based company, so theres a shitload of source code and content that I can't lose. Running photoshop, rhapsody, firefox, and Homesite takes up all my computer's resources... and because my company sucks up every last penny, I won't be affording a new box anytime soon.

That and the $200 monthly powerbill... It went up as soon as I started using f@h, so I'm going to see if f@h is the cause.

My only other option is my company's dual 2.6ghz xeon server... but that runs my whole company so I don't think I can really risk that right now.

I promise... my first million and I will open a small datacenter with 50 dual proc boxen, just for f@h! :D

B0rg the mouse! B0rg the mouse!

:D

lol... it's definitely a fun work environment.

A few days last week I spent eating free pizza/burgers/hotdogs/chicken, drinking soda from the free soda machine, and playing a shockwave RPG all day... I'm one of the beta testers on this new web based RPG coming out soon. Open beta starts in May. :p

From my 7th floor office window, I can see epcot, tower of terror, swan and dolphin hotel, and a lot of other things. If I'm there late enough, I get crazy fireworks shows.

We're going to epcot this week too... and to a press event where we've hired Bare Naked Ladies and Smashmouth to perform.

Oh, and I get paid well too.

It's a good job afterall!

Glad to hear you got a good job!

However - if you have stuff to valuable to lose in a format BACK it up.
Before a power outage/surge, HD failure, formats it for you.
200Gb drives are going for $80 after rebate, it's not really worth buying anything smaller -
So get a 200Gb, put an OS on it and copy everything over from that 80GB. Then format and rebuild the 80 and use that for backup.

I just got my first job out of college on tuesday. Its no Disney, but I will get to be a network admin. for a nice little non-profit in the healthcare industry and that makes me feel good about myself. I graduated in December, started looking in February, and finally landed one in early April. I am so geeked :)

I had to learn a lot about 401Ks and health benefits recently though. I didn't want to sound stupid to the HR manager tomorrow when I meet with her. I still have one question though: I understand that a 401k is for retirement and you will get penalized hard if you pull out money early, but I remember reading something about being able to use it to buy a house and not getting penalized. Can you do that with a 401k? or am I thinking of an IRA? Ok, lets rephrase: is there anyway to pull money out of a 401k before 60 without getting penalized?

Also, my employer will automatically contribute 5% of my salary in my 401k (actually a 403b which i guess is the same thing) and then match 2%. Being that I am 22 years old, do you think it would be wise for me to throw 2% of my salary into my 401k so that I can have 9% total in my 401K....7% of which will be free?

I know this is way off-topic but I am a n00b to these real world issues.

Oh yeah, one of my first checks is going to a new main box for myself that will fold 24/7. The old box will go to my gf and will be folding 24/7 as well. Fold on Brethren!

MUAHAHAHA my plan is working, only 5 days to overtake Xeno now....MUAHAHA...

I mean...um, yeah...that sucks dude.

Your score does not look flatlined to me....

Fake edit 1- I turned this in before reading about your new job. I don't feel so bad for you anymore.

Fake edit 2- JustAGuy: You win the off topic post of the year. I have no clue on early withdraws form a 401k for buying a house. All I know is if your paying child support in some states, the value is based from after retirement account investments to a certian %.

I was originally going to state that I got a job and then leave, but then questions just kept flowing.

Who presents me with my award for most off-topic? :)

Well if you'd like to join us in IRC, irc.enterthegame.com, #hardfolding channel, I'm sure one of us would be more than happy to slap you with a trout! :p

Anyhow, congrats on the new job xENo!

I'm currently researching 401ks. Nobody needs to answer my questions, I am finding them through the magic of the internet!!! Google R0XorZ my lame ass.

I'm not sure what your income is (and its none of my business) but the best move I ever made was investing in a $40 external USB/FW enclosure, a 200gb IDE drive (not sure what they go for) and a piece of software called Backup to CD-RW Made easy.

The software allows for backups to any removable media (including 200gb hard drives), the backups are easily configurable, and look like they even can be made to network shares meaning multiple PCs backuing up to same external hard drive. Given the 20+gb of mp3s and 15gb of Nikon NEFs I have, it's the best setup I have found to routinly backup my 40gb of crap.

Nice.,... I may have to do that.

As for my points yesterday... thanks to whoever is folding on my name... lol
