Apparently a senior Microsoft executive says that all the uncertified third-party software that gets loaded onto new PCs could damage Vista's launch. The word of the day also comes from this very same article, the word is “craplets.”

The concern arises from third-party software that hardware makers commonly install on new computers in exchange for a fee, many of which have not been tested and certified by Microsoft to work with Vista, the executive said. They include things such as links to online services, and demo versions of programs. "We call them craplets," the official said.

If you think that Microsoft is blowing this out of proportion, you might want to think again. Last year [H] Consumer expressed their displeasure with what many people have encountered with a new PC…pre-installed software problems. We affectionately like to call it “bloatware”, it doesn’t have the same ring as craplets but we try.
 
Every dell or other premanufactured computer I buy for my FnF get's wiped and reloaded. Every single one. They are so loaded with software that the crawl the first time you load them up. How many millions of people have bought computers that are cripped when they first buy them?
 
I bought a Dell XPS 3.2GHz laptop for work and it had a fair amount of craplets (I love that word) on it BUT it also had a good deal of USEFUL stuff on it and 90% of all the "extras" came on a CD...not pre-installed.

heh...craplets.
 
We also reload all the Dell PCs and HP laptops that we get at my work and we did the samething to all the Gateways we got at my last job also, but its really getting anoying that they no longer a sending install disks and disks with all the drivers and software on then anymore they make you create "recovery disks" that is a image with all the "craplets" already one them. Makes my job alot harder when i have to wipe them.

Implement ghost and you won't have any problems deploying computers at your business when they come in from a vendor.
 
I prefer the term craplets as opposed to bloatware. I motion that all new bloatware references be replaced with craplet. Anyone second ?
 
Bloatware is a much more fitting name than craplets. Evil tongues may suggest that MS steered clear of that term because of the bloadware additions to Vista.

Well im working on that right now but there still arises the problem of finding all the drivers for the pcs.

That's the exception to the rule. Most computers nowadays that are retail from the big manufacturers (Dell, Gateway, Compaq) have a LOT of bloatware installed on them. When my parents bought a new computer 3 years ago, when they got it home I IMMEDIATELY went through and deleted every piece of bloatware on it.

It added up to about 10 GB of hard-drive space, and about 30 seconds starting up the computer. That's a LOT for a system that only takes 30 seconds to start up now.
 
Craplets is an awesome term. I am going to start using it. Much better at giving a negative connotation than bloatware.
