At first I thought it was cause of mp3s that are crappy quality, but I hear crackling during movies, games, etc. I have Logitech z560s plugged in onboard audio (SoundMAX).
 
its the onboard sound

i had the same problem with my onboard sound on my a7n8x

i went out and bought an audigy 2 ZS

problem solved

much much better sound quality now
