Cracked G35, replacement?

A G35 I use is toast - I dropped then ran over it with a chair. I'm looking for a replacement. Another one would be the easy answer but I thought heck, why not try something else released in the meanwhile.

Things I like about the Logitech:
- closed - provides meaningful isolation, unlike e.g. PC350.
- Sound. Punchy & gaming-appropriate, adjustable, good quality.
- Swing-up mic auto-mute. Me likey.
- Side controls - also great.
- over-ear comfort

Things I'm not so hot on.
- Virtual surround. Maybe I'm expecting unwarranted miracles but the Dolby Headphone, while effective as an atmosphere enhancer and a heck of a lot better than most CMSS + headphone combos, still isn't actually usable in terms of being able to pinpoint stuff
- Headband shape - I like a close fit, but the flat top profile puts point pressure on the top of my head. It's not overly egregious, but it could be a little more comfortable.

So what should I aim for?
 
I tried the Audio Techinica A700 and they are good for gaming. It is like the AD700 but closed, but it does not have a mic so you would have to buy a zalman mic clip on for 9 bucks.
 
I'm looking for a headset, and ideally I'm looking for something better than the G35 - not similar or inferior, even from a headphone.
 
Well there is the Razer Megoladon although it may be an open design. The Razer Tiamat will be out soon and actually has multiple drivers in each side.

There is also the AstroGaming A40 headset.

Also the PC360 is the open design, the PC350 is the closed version.

Other than those there really isn't much out there if you want a higher end gaming headset.

Sound quality wise you will be able to get better sound quality from a straight up pair of nice headphones and a stand alone mic.

There's a hell of a lot more than that floating around, surely.

But I'll stick to two-driver. Multiple drivers is undoubtedly more effective in terms of where you perceive stuff coming from, but the sweep of sound is usually poor and having to accomodate those drivers reduces the size of the primary driver, and that's something I'm not keen on.

I think it's often a wash to be honest, especially at the ~$100 range - a lot of fauxdiophiles I find read way too much into the 'headphone = superior' factor, which is all the more ridiculous since most of them have obviously never owned anything beyond a $20 Altec Lansing.

Besides, headphone+Zalman combo is pretty laughable as a viable headset replacement if you actually use the microphone for any length of time. And yes, I have them floating around - used with everything all the way up to an Orpheus - and I'm *very* sure it's an inferior option. Desk mic? No. I don't want a DJ/podcaster setup cluttering up the desk just to get proper pickup. So yup, headsets only.

I'd personally be looking for something a little more upper-end - unless the performance is exceptional (i.e. G35-beating for starters)
 
I have G35's and I love em. The thing you said about not being able to pinpoint direction is interesting. I think it based on the actual game's output. MW2, for example, has terrible surround sound output for them. Black ops has wonderful output. I can pinpoint on either, but MW2 seems to have a TON of sound reflection and you can hear the guy on the other side of a building.

I'd say to get another set of G35 or the wireless version, the G930. I have a friend that plays with the G930 and loves them. He never complains about quality or lag. The only thing is keeping them charge, but it seems they have good life to them. He walks around his house and still talks to us perfectly clear. You could always go for the F540 which are the stereo version of the G930.
 
So re-buy? Nothing else? I'd really like to try an alternative, as I still have one other G35 to compare and contrast - seems like a waste of an opportunity to give something else either similar or better a go.

I looked at e.g. the Sony's but there's not much in the way of anywhere near authoritative reviews, and I can't see if they're open or closed... looks open?
