CPU vs GPU for performance

Which of the following do you think would be the fastest @1280x1024 in CPU intense games, such as Half Life 2:
a) AMD Athlon64 4000+, 1GB RAM and Radeon X800Pro 256MB
b) AMD Athlon64 3500+, 1GB RAM and Radeon X800XT 256MB
Please disregard the price difference between the two alternatives.
 
At that resolution, with all settings maxed out, both setups would play extremely well. Even if the xt were faster, you wouldnt know it without looking at the FPS counter. If I were to choose between the two, I would go with the 4000 simply because as both would be more than capable gamers with no noticable performance increase, the 4000 would perform better in other areas. But I do wonder though what the actual performance difference would be. I just bought a 3500, replacing my p4 3.2c, and my average framerate jumped by about 20, even though I turned AA/AF to 4/8 whereas it wasnt even on before. Me thinks CPU does make quite a difference in HL.
 
When playing HL, the CPU does make a big differenece. I just upgraded from P4 2.27GHZ to 3.0E @ 3.38 and my fps jumped by about 40-50.
